Self-doubt can be a vocalist’s greatest obstacle, but overcoming it is key to artistic growth. Consistent practice builds familiarity and trust in one’s abilities, making performances feel more natural. Encouraging feedback should highlight strengths while guiding improvement, fostering motivation rather than fear. Reminding vocalists of their past achievements reinforces their unique voice and potential. I have an "alternative" vocal coaching practice that requires that I meet the student where they are before we can really get things moving, so if self-doubt is a real issues, I try to get to know the parts of them that have such doubts, what is motivating that part of them, etc. I then try to find out if there are any other parts of themselves in the room. Is it all doubt? Is there some other part of them that brought them to the lesson? What does that part have to say to the client and to the world. I think sometimes it's worth it to have those two "voices" have a chat with one another. After all that parts work, the student is generally confident and available to learn and practice.

Self esteem is crucial: sometimes as an engineer I apply vocal tuning techniques that allow to build confidence in the performer especially in the first takes, to get to the point where then he can work confidently and professionally.

To help your vocalist overcome self-doubt and sing with confidence, start by fostering a positive environment where they feel safe to express themselves. Encourage them to set realistic goals and celebrate small achievements to build their self-esteem. Incorporate breathing exercises to promote relaxation and focus before singing. Use affirmations to counter negative thoughts, reinforcing their strengths and progress. Encourage regular practice in front of supportive friends or family to simulate performance conditions. Finally, remind them that every singer experiences self-doubt; sharing these feelings can normalize the experience and empower them to embrace their unique voice.
