You're considering a major organizational change. How can you assess potential risks effectively?
When contemplating a significant change in your organization, understanding the risks involved is crucial. Consider these strategies:
- Conduct a thorough SWOT analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) to evaluate internal and external factors.
- Engage stakeholders in discussions to gain diverse insights on potential impacts.
- Implement a pilot program to test changes on a smaller scale before full deployment.

How do you approach risk assessment when considering major changes?
-
Identifying potential hazards. Identifying who might be harmed by those hazards. Evaluating risk (severity and likelihood) and establishing suitable precautions. Implementing controls and recording your findings. Reviewing your assessment and re-assessing if necessary. Businesses should perform a risk assessment before introducing new processes or activities, before introducing changes to existing processes or activities (such as changing machinery), or when the company identifies a new hazard.

I map out the change—what’s affected, who’s involved, and what could go wrong. Then I ask the team for their perspectives; they’ll spot risks I might miss. Next, I break risks into manageable categories: people, processes, and systems. From there, I identify which ones we can control and which we’ll need contingency plans for. Finally, I play devil’s advocate—what’s the worst-case scenario, and can we live with it? It’s about being prepared, not paranoid.

Assessing risks in organizational change is absolutely critical. Here are three additional approaches I’d suggest as complements: 1️⃣ Stakeholder Mapping: Identify and prioritize all relevant stakeholders who might be impacted by the change. Their diverse perspectives can reveal risks and resistance that might otherwise go unnoticed. 2️⃣ Scenario Planning: Develop multiple scenarios for both the success and failure of the proposed change. This approach helps you prepare for unexpected challenges and create alternative solutions in advance. 3️⃣ Data Analysis and Benchmarks: Leverage data from similar projects (either internal or external) to identify trends, pitfalls, and best practices that can guide your decision-making process.
