One thing I know for sure no skill is useless. From experience, as I transitioned from Sales to General management, to innovation and R&D to manufacturing and so on. Overall working in different parts of the value chain is key to build strong businesses and leaders, it allows one to a hands on experience on how to build something then sell and how to make it successful. That being said, as all the other opinions here, there is few key attributes that are crucial: be humble, listen, ask, understand, listen again, then study and research not just technology but customers as well.
