You’re a geologist who wants to be a better leader. What’s the first step you should take?

The first thing is to replace the word boss with leader and the word leader only means having greater responsibility, having a constant evaluation of oneself. Lead the team in an appropriate manner, manage crises and technical capacity for decision making. Teamwork, delegating responsibilities. Know your team's strengths and weaknesses, starting with mine. The goal is to turn weaknesses into strengths. Have clarity on achievable goals. Be respectful of the technical evolution of the team and support them in understanding the geological models.

Every time, we realize the facts and mistakes from learning new things from projects, questions, etc... I always assess myself by doing things by myself and not depending on others, which will give us confidence and strength in our subjects which also exposes our weaknesses.

Working hard and trying all of your skills is not the only way. You need to find a mentor in the field. it should be noted that mentorship must be earned and not just given. Prove yourself and touch base with your mentor on issues you found troubling in your leadership journey. This will help you to improve

Multiple courses are available for leadership in general. In order to be a good leader in a geological context you need to understand the importance of each professionals role in the bigger picture and help them all to get tot he destination you planned, in a manner of speaking. This means good project management skills are critical.

Treine sua capacidade de escutar para tomar decisões. A habilidade da oratória é mais visível e pulsante aos olhos e ouvidos de quem está ao redor do orador. É importante saber falar e articular seu pensamento, transmitindo e fazendo as pessoas ao redor entender. Mas a habilidade de ouvir é tão ou mais importante. Um líder deve trabalhar para seus liderados e não o contrário. E isto só é possível ou assertivo se o líder estiver atendo ao que o seu time tem para falar, e saber processar e lidar com os liderados lhe repassam. Saber ouvir é o primeiro passo para se transformar num líder melhor, afinal, na grande maioria dos casos o líder já "deve vir de fábrica" sabendo falar.

Leading is about getting the maximum out of the team, even if that means standing back and supporting. So not only your skills, but those around you need to be harnessed. Ultimately, you will find yourself juggling between the individual aspirations of your team, and that of the business. Give credit where it is due, but dont allow a problem area to fester. Being approachable, resolute and team orientated are all qualities you need to develop.
