Team dynamics is key when leading research talent. It begins with hiring individuals who fit the culture and then giving them clear job responsibilities. Setting up these individuals for success through clear communication of job expectations. Building an environment where open communication of ideas is encouraged and incentivised. Team members should confidently share new ideas and seek feedback. Early identification and management of team members who impact the team cohesion. Encouraging independent decision making to increase accountability, improve learning and build future leaders.

Fostering a positive team dynamic is key to enhancing research productivity. As a leader, prioritize building a culture of open collaboration and mutual respect. Facilitate regular brainstorming sessions and create channels for transparent feedback. Address conflicts promptly and equitably, ensuring all voices are heard. It is either “Leading the research” or “Managing the researchers”. I personally don’t believe in the concept called “Leading researchers” Hence, when it comes to managing the researchers, who may be combination of top expert, junior researchers, Scholar students, etc • You are managing them to align it with the research strategy and the derived research methodology. • You become an anchor between research team and external stakeholders, • You play an important role in conflict resolution, communication with external environment • You be an enabler to spread the culture of innovation and openness within the team.

Team building - On boarding diverse skillsets and expertise. Cultivating a positive and collaborative culture, open communication & knowledge sharing. Mentorship from related field experts and regular training. Giving scope for professional development opportunities to help them grow and succeed. Defining clear research objectives aligned with company vision and creating strategic plan, timeline, resource allocation and responsibilities. Encourage creativity and innovation. Creating an environment where they will not afraid of failures and they learn from it to come bolder next time.

Defining the deadline for research sometimes seems impossible. However this necessary to measure progress towards the end goals. Work with the project managers to establish schedules that afford room for flexibility. Create contingency plans for unexpected events that will have an impact on the timeline. Make a list of dependencies that have an impact on the progress and factor these for deadline setting.Get a buy in from the team about the deadlines before these are communicated to any stakeholders. Schedule a progress review every week or every month to keep track of the progress.

These ethical standards should be laid out at the start of every research project. While the governance should be looked into by the team leads every team member should feel equally responsible for maintaining these standards. There can be educational content disseminated among the team at regular intervals covering these ethical standard. The team can be given examples/case studies of instances where an ethical individuals actions saved the organisations reputation and or led to better research quality. And also of cases where a shortcut had financial or regulatory implications for the organisation. It is easier to get individuals to stay ethical if they are aware of the implications of being unethical.
