A hack I usually use to feel connected to my home country while living abroad is to schedule regular "virtual hangouts" with friends and family using video call platforms. Instead of spontaneous calls, we set these hangouts in advance, treating them as we would any other important appointment or social gathering. This ensures that everyone can join regardless of their busy schedules and time zone differences. To make these sessions more engaging and to recreate the feeling of being back home, we often align our hangouts with specific events or activities, such as watching a sports game together online, celebrating a birthday, or even cooking and eating the same traditional meals "together" while video chatting.

Technology is really in our favor today, as it helps us have live connections, in a good quality, very easily. Video conversations are a great way to keep in touch with your loved one back home. Make sure you find the right time to call, taking into consideration the time differences.

I volunteer for an NGO dedicated to the Romanian community in the Netherlands, and it helps to stay connected with my home country and also with the Romanians in the Netherlands. Joining online communities from your home country is a very good way to reconnect with the home country and also participating in national cultural clubs.

Joining an online community is definitely a must for those who want to navigate their new country. This community can assist with information that helps new migrant to find their way around all the basic things they need to settle in their new country quickly. They also get to hear information about their home country quickly through this community.

One thing I found useful is finding common passions and connecting around them. Personally I created a group of Formula 1 fans (using Facebook and Meetup). It started small and today, it brings more and more people each week. The idea was to put myself out there, and find a way to meet new people on a regular basis. With some a close relationship came out of it, with others it's just a nice connection once in a while. The idea is to try ;)

Casa migração é única, mas há na multidão de pessoas que faz esse caminho, experiências parecidas, há sabedoria, há conforto e cuidado; há quem saiba "o caminho das pedras" que pode ajudar nas amizades mas pode também ajudar nos momentos difíceis no novo país. Getting a new job in your new home is also easier through the Expat network, because some companies rely on referrals more to fill their open positions.

I love having Scottish nights with my non Scottish friends! They learn a little about Scotlands language, traditions & culture… often want to visit after and most importantly we have a great time celebrating my home! I would say there are two lines of contact you must maintain. One personal with family, friends, colleagues. This keeps you in touch with your culture, your very own essence of life. And the second line is your professional contacts. If you plan repatriating remember to follow what is happening in your company, understand all restructuring that might be happening and keep in touch with your former team and leadership. Estando em outro país e para manter o contato com o meu país de origem, acho interessante manter contato regular com amigos e familiares por meio de chamadas de vídeo, mensagens de texto e redes sociais. Assinar jornais online, revistas e blogs do seu país de origem para se manter atualizado sobre notícias e eventos importantes. Participar de grupos de expatriados ou comunidades online de pessoas do seu país que vivem no exterior. Assistir programas de TV, filmes e ouvir música do seu país de origem para se manter conectado com a cultura e linguagem. Como já morei em alguns países, essas foram algumas medidas que eu adotei e que me aproximaram do meu país na ocasião.
