You're looking to get promoted. What do you need to focus on?

Ask "Why" ✅ Why you deserve a promotion - this is a question you must ask yourself. Not that I mean to demotivate you, but as you craft an answer to this, you are creating the evidence, a pitch and also building confidence. ✅ Document all the achievements (tangible and intangible) ✅ Identify all the key stakeholders who can influence the Promotion decision (remember, it's not only your manager) ✅ Increase your visibility to your key stakeholders by showcasing all your work ✅ Try to evaluate what is needed in the new role (your next level after promotion) in terms of skills and watch out for the gaps if any. Try to reduce these. ✅ Do not wait for the last moment to react, start positioning yourself much in advance for the position

Even before the appraisal discussion starts there has to be a planning in mind What is the kind of contribution I am going to deliver in the organisation, if the answer is uncertain, then understand the issues organisation is facing, get yourself 'upgraded' and then you will be in a better position and in a better mind set for the next role Promotion also translates into the larger team size and at times larger geographies. This makes it important to learn the people skills as well.

Be clear on why you want the promotion. Capture it visually so that you can see it everyday & get motivated. Understand the process of promotion by speaking to your manager and people that you trust. Request for a mentor in the organization to get another trusted perspective. Chart out your understanding of what all you need to accomplish to get to the next level. Create a set of goals from this. Increase the goals by 50% to account for unforeseen circumstances. Make a list of people that you would need support from to achieve your goals. Start networking with them and understanding what they care about and how you could support them. Keep learning from what is working, what is not and course correct accordingly. Keep the faith.

Make it known. I coach many clients who are initially uncomfortable letting it be known they want promotion. It isn't enough to assume our hard work, dedication and fantastic results are enough to get us noticed and discussed in the promotion rounds. Make your intentions clear with your managers and be transparent how you have met and exceeded your performance targets - following this with written evidence can be very powerful. Large organisations often have a set annual budget for promotions, it can be easy therefore to be passed over for the other person who is pushing themselves to the front. You must therefore back yourself. Finding an ally to help champion you in these promotional rounds is also very effective.

The description is good and needed, but it all feels too "external" to the person wanting the promotion. For me, the first step would be to understand why you want that promotion, how that fits with your career goals and your values. I would also do some reflections on what might get in the way of this promotion, how you might sabotage it, how you might resource yourself during the process.

Your network needs to reflect where you want to be not where you are now. Think about the role you want and what types of roles you would interact with at that point, those are the people you want to reach out now so that they can offer insights and support when you to not only reach your promotion but sustain that new role when you get there. Sponsors in your network are super important, they open the doors to rooms you are not in yet. Find internal and external sponsors. A sponsor is someone who is well respected, an expert in their field and well known. They have the authority to make decisions at tables concerning how money is spent and they need to know you and your work.

Building a network is where I see a lot of people struggling and the main responses are “ I do not have the confidence”, or “I m an introvert”, or even “this is not for me”. These become obstacles when we try to show up in a different way than our authentic self. For example, if we spend energy pretending to be confident or extroverted, this will reduce our active listening, our presence and expression leaving us exhausted. Instead try to find the best form of networking for you, create authentic connections and if you still struggle get a mentor and someone who can champion you.

Let me explain why you need a network. When you are a potential talent and you are among the top performers in your company , you have to have relationships with others , histories of collaborations , examples of success working with different teams and then is when you develop your network . Open your self to be accountable and/or help in special projects , do collaborations and be a strong , charismatic person bringing. New ideas and recommendations to others . Only by doing so you could promote your self within the organization while developing a nice network that will last many years and sometimes a lifetime . Remember that by working alone you might not be able to construct t for the future.

To increase visibility and connections, actively engage with key decision-makers, influencers, and supporters both within and outside your organization. Attend industry events, join professional committees, and volunteer for cross-departmental projects to broaden your exposure and demonstrate your capabilities. Sharing your ideas and insights through presentations, articles, or online platforms can also help you establish credibility and attract the attention of potential advocates. Connect with other departments, industries, or fields to gain diverse perspectives and uncover new opportunities for growth and advancement. Enhance your professional reputation to increase your chances of being recognized and supported for career progression.

Building and maintaining relationships with senior partners across various sections within a law firm is indeed crucial for associates aiming for partnership. In essence, while solid financial performance is a critical component of the journey to partnership, the strength and breadth of your professional relationships play a pivotal role in securing the necessary support when it comes time for partner elections. The path to partnership is not just about what you know or how much business you bring in; it's also about who knows you, who supports you, and the quality of the relationships you've built along the way.

The worst thing you could do is paste your CV into your LinkedIn profile and vice versa. Make your LinkedIn profile a 4D experience of who you are. Think of it like your personal landing page, let your character shine through and stand out. We are all unique and we all have different experiences and achievements. Shout loud and proud about your achievements at work through posts or comments and don't forget to support others on their achievements too through commenting and liking other posts. Kindness begets more kindness.

I would add showcase your achievements "with authenticity", from a place of honesty and strength. What do the achievements say about you? What do you want people to understand from them? What is the best way to communicate them without sounding arrogant etc.? When relevant also acknowledge who helped you along the way and show your gratitude.

Be aware that your best sponsor is you. Today, every modern organization has an HR internet site. As you become more interested in growing within your company, you should most likely actualize your profile and personalize it according to your talents. Invest in adding value to your personal brand. Engage with trainings and courses that add value to it, prime yourself among your boss and peers, and communicate your milestones. One good way Is it by providing your boss with three monthly objectives and confirming by the end of them how you are advancing? Also, engage in IN to promote yourself. This is not an app to get a new job; it is more than that. Use it properly to communicate your personal and professional advances. Work for your dreams

Take the time to document and highlight your contributions, results, and successes within the organisation. -Update your CV and LinkedIn profile with specific examples and metrics that demonstrate the impact of your work. -Crafting a compelling personal brand statement can also help summarise your skills, goals, and value proposition to potential decision-makers. -Don't hesitate to share your achievements with your boss, peers, and network through regular reports, presentations, or testimonials. -By effectively communicating your value and impact, you not only reinforce your worth within the organization but also increase visibility and recognition for your potential promotion.

When it takes to showcasing achievements it can be hard to remember everything you did over N period of time so how strange it could look but logging achievements, no matter the size, is worth doing for yourself then processing and probably making some category of what goal you contributed to. Definitely adding bunch of things to CV and portfolio is not the action that must be undertaken.

Always focus on exceeding expectations, developing new skills, and actively contributing. Take initiative, showcase your expertise, and build strong relationships. Most importantly, talk to your manager about your career goals and seek their guidance. This shows proactiveness and dedication, making you a strong candidate for that next step

Seeking new challenges involves actively pursuing opportunities to expand your skill set, take on unfamiliar tasks, or tackle projects that push you outside of your comfort zone. It's like trying to solve new puzzles or play new games that you're not used to. When you do this, it's a sign that you're open to learning and growth. It's also a sign that you're not afraid of new things. This can impress your bosses, and they might consider promoting you because they see you're ready for more responsibility. I'm ready for greater things and I'm unafraid of trying!"

Growth can come from learning and/or doing. You ideally want a combination of both. Learn through coaching, mentoring, taking on new projects, volunteering your skillsets in areas you've never worked in before or getting formal training qualifications are some great starting points. Apply what you have learned by practically applying those teachings into your day job. Find creative ways to weave them in, it will help you to think outside of the box in creating new opportunities for yourself. Brainstorm a few ideas with your boss and their boss and see what resonates with them.

New challenges to win your promotion might include all sorts of special assignments like helping in the review of process; collaborate with new hires; accept a stretch within other departments ect. In my experience , I really enjoy what was called the “big sister initiative “ , to help new hires integration ; I also helped my boss with some of the administrative tasks or time consuming activities like allocation of products , contract wording development and GP analysis . By learning how to manage those tasks not I got to grow administrative knowledge, strength my hard and soft skills ending with the promotion I was looking for. Think big and you will conquer your dreams .

If there is an opportunity within your organization that you wish to pursue, yes always ask. Most organizations will hire within before going out to the market. Don't assume you are not qualified... You will be surprised.

Closed mouths don't get fed. Plain and simple. For introverts, like myself, this is often misheard as you need to sell your work and therefore be self-centered to get promoted. In reality, constantly reducing our needs against the backdrop of others perceived needs at work, means we get to the point that we become invisible ourselves, which helps no one. Your contributions deserve recognition, and by speaking up, you empower yourself and inspire others. AND get your well deserved promotions. As women, studies show we are more inclined to not talk about our own achievements and ambitions openly at work. So here is your reminder to talk about you more. People won't know all the good stuff you are doing if you are not sharing.

Asking for a promotion can seem daunting but if you outline your key achievements and the key benefits and value you bring to the role, you can only but ask. This will show your enthusiasm and interest in developing your career within the organisation.

Know your why, state it clearly and ask for what you want. Hands down the person who asks is much more likely to get promoted than the one that doesn’t. Remember, the worst case is you get a “no” or “not this month or quarter” or “not on my watch” which is valuable feedback that you need, regardless of the promotion.

Patience and persistence are vital when striving for a promotion. Recognise that advancement in your career is a journey that often requires time and dedication. While it's natural to encounter obstacles, setbacks, or even rejections, it's crucial not to lose sight of your goal. Stay committed to your growth and development, continuing to work hard and seek opportunities for improvement. Celebrate progress and achievements along the way, acknowledging the steps you've taken towards your goal. Get a timeline, in some large organisations it can take a long time to get through red tape. By maintaining a positive mindset, staying resilient you position yourself for success in the long run.

Be disruptive. Simple but it must be understand and executed correctly. It will prove your worth tenfold and allow you a stage and leverage in your hierarchy. I don’t mean make a big fuss in a meeting or show up late. I mean find a way to improve the business in a way that creates a new opportunity previously unreachable or sets the company apart from competitors. Compare Uber to other taxi business or Air Bnb to other hotel chains. My story is I was a sales rep for a branded product company. No one wanted to talk to me and worst off I competed with many other reps selling my product cheaper. I suggest rebranding us reps as brand consultants who provide solutions. Now we have more respect and better margins for the same deals.

You really need to focus on improving your self-confidence, self-worth, and addressing your limiting beliefs. Some are more along the journey than others, but demonstrating how you’re positively contributing to the values and ethos of your company is something else to consider when thinking about promotion. Joining and really taking part in employee networks, or supporting initiatives outside of the day to day such as being a wellbeing champion. Taking part in making a difference to the culture of your company is something that should also be considered.
