I love this free online personality test because it doesn't require me to sign up or login: 16personalities.com It's based on Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and provides insights into my work preferences and potential career paths. Like most tests, it's best to not overthink and to answer your first thought. It took me 7 mins 46 secs to complete, and it told me I am a Protagonist (ENFJ-T).

In addition to the specific tools that others have recommended I value the one-on-one conversations with peers and colleagues. Keeping an open ear for suggestions and learning from others' experience is an easy way to improve oneself. Therefore networking can also be considered as one of the tools for career assessment and improvement.

Whenever I work with a new career or executive coaching client, I invariably begin with a personality assessment - because it provides a baseline or a starting point. Why? Because in order to develop a successful career one first needs to develop a good level of self-awareness. Personality assessments are one of the best tools, feedback is another. One thing I've found knowledgeable is certifications that enhance and upgrade our skills as and how we choose to take up. They brush up our knowledge that we are already aware about and also makes us industry-ready for a job in the area of interest. They also hone our skills by giving us a platform to learn and make resumes stand out from other candidates. Udemy is an economical certification platform which can be mostly afforded by anyone to learn and acquire skills. Other platforms are also nice but can be on the higher range. In short for a fresher it is very important to get certified in new skills for acquiring jobs in their interest field.

Following on from @Blandine's comment. The Strong Interest Inventory is based on the work of John Holland. It is a good assessment to identify options but just because you have an interest it doesnt mean you have the talent. That's why I will use it in conjunction with discussion and other assessments - like the Highlands Ability Battery.

Whilst useful, it can be a case for many people of - what does this mean? That's why over 20 years ago I trained to use the Highlands Ability Battery. This is less well known yet incredibly valuable. You undertake timed work samples to find out more about different abilties including problem solving, whether you are a generalist or specialist, idea generation. This is far more valuable than self report. It is a premium assessment but the results are valid for years to come.

VIA strength assessment is one I use with my students. It gives your top five strengths which can be used for discussion in mentor sessions and to rework a resume and cover letter to better communicate the character of the person.

I have found the Clifton Strengthsfinder to be enormously helpful, both in terms of understanding my own motivations, as well as those of others… while I did not use this for career planning as such, it helped me understand how I could contribute most in the role that I was in…. I also coached people using the Strengthsfinder to best plan how to address challenges they were facing, but based on using their strengths.. this is liberating and has a far greater chance of success

The review helps them gain insight into their strengths and identify areas where they can improve their leadership skills. Alternatively, they can be courageous and ask for feedback from colleagues, including peers, key stakeholders, management, and executives within the organization.
