Improving supervisory skills hinges on two key areas: effective communication and self-reflection. Mastering communication involves clear articulation, active listening, and adaptability. Meanwhile, self-reflection fosters personal growth by identifying strengths, weaknesses, and learning from experiences. Prioritizing these areas not only enhances leadership abilities but also cultivates trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement within the team.

Put your skills to practice 4. understand that people are different and therefore you can apply a one fit all approach

As a supervisor, your number one priority is your team. Never, ever do the blame game. If a member of your team does not meet expectations - first, look at yourself honestly. Meet with the TM and ask: Did I not explain the goal or expectation? Did I not give you the correct training or tools? Did I not allow enough time or resources to complete as required? Show humility and your team will always be loyal. You are there to lift them up. You should always be training your replacement.

If you wish to improve your supervisory skills, most tend to overlook the need to strengthen that backbone, the ability to be able to call a spade a spade, provide feedback as is. In today's world, most managers try to play it safe, rather than speak the truth and allegedly cause offence. Being able to address issues directly and honestly is crucial for effective leadership, fostering transparency, accountability, and trust within your team.

One of the best tools I've found to empower someone is instead of telling someone to do something ask them if they can. If they tell you they can they have just created a goal in their own mind rather than a resentment at being told to do something. Most times the task then becomes a matter of personal pride and people tend try harder to achieve what it is they themselves told you they could do.

There can be conflicts in and among the team. Handling that is the worst as we can't take a biased decision rather we take a logical decision as a solution for the same. This may favor one party while that may dishonor the other. So to hold the team together the edges of those decisions and solutions has to be feathered so that it is not hurting anyone.

One thing I have found is having the team members that is having the conflict write how they think the conflict was started and how it can be resolved. Have a meeting with the individuals the next day once they have had a chance to reflect on the conflict. This will allow tempers to calm and most likely a common solution can be found. Nine times out of ten it is a miscommunication issue. I also find team members only need to understand the other members point of view. Having them change their duties for a day or two if possible helps them understand. Most of the time having clear roles, rules and boundaries. P.S Do Not Hire a person with less experience than your current team member for a position above them this creates a problem.

Understanding the difference between supervising and micromanagement. Even Senior Managers / Supervisors find it hard to identify / strike a balance between the two. Needless to say, micromanaging isn't the way to supervise and is counter productive to effective management. Micromanaging can lead to decreased morale, autonomy, and productivity among team members. Instead, supervisors should perhaps focus on providing guidance, support, and clear expectations while allowing their team members the space to demonstrate their skills and expertise.
