In this business, you can't just sit and wait. You've got to be a trend hunter. What's worked for me is a mix of hard data and gut feeling, honestly. I pore over my sales reports, looking for little blips, like a certain product suddenly taking off or a demographic I wasn't expecting showing up. Then I get out of the office. I talk to my customers – not just "how's everything?" but real conversations. I ask them what they're into, what they're seeing other people doing. I go to different kinds of businesses, see what's buzzing there. Sometimes a trend starts in a completely unrelated industry and then boom, it hits your franchise. The other thing I do is talk to other franchisees remember, we can learn so much from each other.

To forecast future consumer trends effectively, stay informed through industry reports, competitor analysis, and customer feedback. Engage with data analytics tools to track purchasing behaviors and demographic shifts. Attend trade shows, conferences, and network with other franchisors to stay ahead of emerging trends. Listening to franchisees on the ground also provides valuable insights into local market changes.

Talk. To. Your. People. Franchisors can’t be everywhere all the time. Franchisors don’t know everything all the time. The perspective of the people with the boots on the ground is so valuable. Data helps you begin to understand. But it’s the experience of the people that help add the context for real insights. Consumer trends may differ place to place - so ditch the one size fits all approach. Instead, embrace the unknown with curiousity and an open mind. #HOTperspectives #FranchiseLeadership

Stay ahead by watching what people actually do, not just what they say. Dive into social media, industry reports, and competitor moves, but more importantly, pay attention to real buying behavior. What’s selling out? What’s getting ignored? Talk to customers, frontline staff, and suppliers—they’ll spot shifts before any analyst does. Keep testing small before going all in. Trends move fast, and in franchising, being adaptable beats being late to the party.
