You're a new manager of a robotics team. How do you assert your authority without alienating the team?

This will take time. It's not a one-meeting and move on. Get to know the team 1-on-1 and as a group. How do they work together? Who shares interests outside of work? Motivations are a big deal -- why did they come to work here? Where are they in their career progression? What do they want to be working on? If they are not already, work on making them into a team -- where they can support and motivate one another, where they know others have their backs and will step up to help out when others get pulled away or run into challenges. This will end up being one of the most rewarding parts of your job.

So, according to the PRINCE2 methodology, I believe that the first step to effective leadership in managing a robotics team is understanding each team member. Taking the time to learn about everyone's backgrounds, skills, and what motivates them is crucial. By following PRINCE2's principles of stakeholder engagement and open communication, I'm confident we can foster a collaborative environment where everyone feels valued and heard.

As far as I have learned in PRINCE2 we should always emphasize transparent communication. Engaging with the team openly, sharing your vision, and encouraging them to voice their opinions and concerns fosters a trustful and collaborative environment, all the while ensuring everyone is aligned with the project goals.

Trust is the key word in all of this. Trust comes from knowing your team and being able to communicate with them effectively. It's also important to avoid just passing along everything to the team. Delegating also involves giving team members the autonomy to achieve the goal, not just be told what to do. Early on, you need to have faith in your team members, give them space to grow and be ready to support them if they struggle. Part of that involves providing a safe environment for them to experiment and even fail -- so that they can learn from the experiences.

Recognizing and rewarding team members for their contributions is a great way to assert authority without alienating them. By acknowledging their efforts and achievements, you establish yourself as a supportive leader who values their work. This approach fosters a positive team dynamic and encourages collaboration while also setting clear expectations for performance and behavior. Additionally, actively involving team members in decision-making processes and seeking their input demonstrates trust and respect, further strengthening your authority as a manager.
