Be sure to research the various types of drone photography to help you find your interest. Knowing what type of photography you want to do with your drone would help mitigate the chances of you getting the wrong drone.

My first step was to clearly define what I needed the drone for—whether it was capturing expansive landscapes, detailed architectural shots, or dynamic event footage. This decision directly influenced the type of drone I needed, as different models excel in various aspects. Balancing my aspirations with my budget was crucial. I learned that investing in a drone that slightly exceeded my current needs offered room for growth without necessitating an immediate upgrade as my skills and demands increased.

Start with a drone that will accomplish your initial goals. You may not need the newest most expensive drone. It is still an investment but start with something more entry level and get really good at using it, taking shots and video and editing. Then you may decide to upgrade.

The quality of the camera and the stability of the gimbal were my top priorities. I looked for a drone with a 1-inch sensor or larger, capable of shooting at least 4K video and capturing RAW photos for greater post-processing flexibility. A 3-axis gimbal was non-negotiable for ensuring smooth footage, even in challenging conditions. This combination was pivotal in achieving professional-grade images and videos that could meet and exceed my clients' expectations.

Ease of use and reliability of the controller and app interface significantly affected my ability to capture shots precisely as envisioned. I preferred drones with dedicated controllers, offering tactile feedback and finer control over flight and camera settings than touchscreen-based apps. However, the app’s functionality for advanced settings, flight data, and live feed quality was equally important. Seamless integration between the controller, app, and drone ensured I could focus on creativity rather than struggling with the interface.

Evaluate the drone's range and signal strength for distant or difficult terrains. Look into its portability and ease of setup, especially if you frequently travel or shoot in various locations. Consider the drone's weather resistance capabilities for shooting in diverse conditions. Additionally, assess the available accessories, like additional batteries, propellers, and carrying cases, which can enhance your shooting experience. These factors contribute to finding a drone that is not only technically suitable but also practical for diverse photography projects.

My tips for selecting the best images is take a potential ideal client out for lunch and pick their brain. Don’t sell your services. This lunch is specifically just to learn about their perspective. Last week I took out a manager in marketing and communications to learn what someone in their position is looking for. I only asked about them and their career and how they would improve my services. I didn’t talk about me or my services. I learned so much!
