In my experience defining the goal at senior level is not effective unless it is clearly communicated throughout the organisation and buy in sought. The vision, mission and values need to be more than text written in a business strategy but must be the golden rules the organisation from top down follow everyday.

First of all a manager / leader should build a culture where information shall not be in bits and pieces. A complete description can help everyone to input. Second most important is to give leverage to each person in team to have an opinion to share. 3rd develop sub teams and assign task as per ability and experience.

Group and individual motivation is essential when trying to get a team or keep one aligned and on the same page. This article highlights the group-level basics but needs to consider that people have unique skills, drivers, and motivators. Leadership is about aligning and balancing organization, team, and individual goals. In your planning, highlight people's exceptional skills that suit them best for a task. Some people might have to lean on weaker skills, and that's ok, too; it's a form of sacrificing for the team's success. Flag this so people can lend a hand and share more appreciation and recognition as that individual will face more and more difficult challenges along the way, due to their lower efficacy match.

The idea is to clear their brains out. Just cut the cord thinking about work and fill their brain with something else. Then, when it's time to go back to work, everyone has had a reset. They will have shifted perspectives - just watch. I would love to say this is optional, but most employees zone out when not at work. Humans need to play as hard as they work.

There is a difference between assessing the situation when you are new to the organization vs. some time in role. A majority of your assessment of the team's capabilities should be done as soon as possible once you assume the role of leader. Aligning the team with the organizations goals should be a continuous endeavor. Inevitably, when there are problems getting the team to be "on the same page", there are a few legacy team members that are sowing the discontent and resistance to change. Your job is to identify them and figure out how to get them on your side in order to get the rest of the team to buy in. Most of the time this can be accomplished by taking as much of their input as possible and adding it to your goal for the team.

Highlight what it might look like if or when you are succeeding as a group versus losing pace. Apply generous recognition and appreciation when team members ask for help or admit to falling behind for any reason. Honesty is putting the team first ahead of the self. It allows you to solve issues earlier and reduces the build up of frustration which will erode alignment. You need to plan for recognition and feedback because you need to know what you are looking for to recognize, and if you need line of sight as the leader, you need to generate it or enlist help. You can't accurately recognize what you can't see clearly, so your plan needs to consider how best to make that happen.

This is action plan has to clearly state daily activities to would help achieve each goal. Make sure they are SMART ( Specific , measurable , actionable , realistic and time bound ) as well.

We are trying to keep the team on the same page, so we promote horizontal praise. It shouldn't all come from the leader. Have team members call out what is helping them and the team. This support helps keep a team aligned and on the same page. If someone presented a dissenting opinion earlier but accepted and committed to whatever plan was chosen, follow up on that. Recognize them for correctly flagging something upfront or credit them for their willingness to commit and keep going. Be mindful about how and where you provide feedback and recognition - private, public, specific, more general, task-based vs attitude and behaviour-based. You need to understand your team intimately to do this expertly.

Upfront, it would be best if you had a realistic understanding of the levels of existing trust and the cohesion of the team. A team is a community that shares common goals. When trust and cohesion are high, the probability of success goes up. If trust or cohesion is weaker or damaged, that has to be part of the planning consideration and the ongoing management. Every team project is an opportunity to strengthen trust and bonds between co-workers and integrate new personalities more deeply. Failing to do this will have immediate and prolonged impacts, like a tax you'll continue to pay. Getting this right creates a generative cycle that pays dividends in the future.

A team is made up of many different personalities, and learning how to navigate different personality types to create team cohesion is a worth while investment to make. The purpose of personality tests and assessments shouldn't be to profile individuals, but rather, to understand more deeply each team members inherent needs so that you can speak to them. By taking this approach your team feels heard and understood resulting in the outcome of a better performing (and happier) team. When people feel that they are being heard, then you can walk them across the bridge to "the same page".

Be curious and open minded as to what's getting in the way. Before you implement a solution, do the work to determine what you are solving for. Is it inadequate communication? Lack of trust? Lack of engagement in the outcome (not inspiring enough)? Outcome isn't connected to the values of the organization? Team members are in the wrong role? Be curious. Be open minded. From there, you have a better opportunity for solving the right problem.
