Learn some programming languages well (C#, JavaScript, PHP are great to start with). Then develop a system with them for yourself, a charity or as a project with friends. The ideal solution would be to be given the go ahead to design a system at your current workplace. Learn the Software Development Life Cycle and go through the stages as you design your project. Many online courses purport to make you an expert in a few days or weeks but this is an all or nothing career. Get feedback from stakeholders at all steps. Do not design in a silo. Its a wonderful career so go all in!

I would say shifting from tech to application development involves many things but some of the prevalents are as: 1).Never jumped to another programming language without understanding the application nature,it's need of code base,planning and its various challanges that you might need to pass in through after starts working on application development. 2). Make sure you are enough aware of coding, testing, use cases, documentation, debugging and deployment.before jump into the application development. 3).Research and find the best techstack for the application as per the requirements.

I also believe its very bad if you have just jumped into the application development and let say you are involved in the developing a web application and you trying to do both frontend and backend both at the time,I say it is not that fruitfully to the new developer for making a strong application. You can niche your selective part of your implementation of the application especially when you are not that experienced or not have much product building experience. Rather you can enhance your one skill and do work with it and contribute in it ,it will give you the expertise at least in that part of development.

You can showcase your project or portfolio on GitHub,medium,with some screenshot and ofCourse all the relevant platform where you think you can attract maximum viewers and give feedback and get interaction with. I believe doing this all as POC(Proof of Concepts) that shows your idea of implementation and possibilities to achieve the defined goal.

Yes,Showing your personal projects that show your strength with different tech stack can may help you attracting a good opportunity in application development. Make sure that you haven't copies code from somewhere else and paste in your file to complete projects. That i believe the worst scenario of getting rejection. At least try to think new to solve a problem in the real world, and implement that idea is solution into the code that gives you the goosebumps for the future opportunity. Applying with you project on the platforms such as LinkedIn,AngelList and try to add that project link to your profile which highlights your skills and ability to the development.
