In my early 20's, at the beginning of my career I was fearless, I had no filter, I said things because I felt they were right without thinking about the repercussions. In my first role as a payroll clerk I was privy to payroll information. I left that job and got another. The company kept me to do a project. I learned that an employee that I worked with received a raise. In an effort to encourage my new employer to give me a raise I mentioned it. Not only did I not get a raise, but the employer congratulated my former co-worker on her raise. I was so embarrassed, to this day I am ashamed. I learned the cardinal rule in HR and PR and really any confidential position acknowledge fault and keep your mouth shut on personnel issues.

You want to own your error but, you need to make sure you focus on the impact you had on the other employees. Listen, learn and grow. When people say growth is painful, this is one of those painful lessons.
