Dealing with a challenging parent in the classroom. Are you prepared to assert your authority effectively?

I remember a time when I had to address an upset parent who was concerned about their child’s grades. The parent came in visibly frustrated, and I could feel the tension in the room. I began by actively listening to their concerns without interrupting, even though the parent’s tone was out of line, which demonstrated respect and understanding. Maintaining a neutral tone and body language, I calmly explained the student’s progress and the steps we were taking to support their learning. By focusing on the student’s best interests and the educational policies in place, I was able to communicate my perspective clearly and confidently. We agreed to have a follow-up meeting to discuss further, allowing both of us time to reflect and prepare.

One thing we must remember is that parents are people just like you and me. They are simply concerned about their children's education, wanting the absolute best for them. As teachers, we also want the best for their children; our students. Communication, respect, and honesty are of the utmost importance when teaching our students and effectively communicating with their parents. Our goal is not to 'assert our authority'. Our goal is to educate our students -as well as their parents. Our goal is to help her students to learn and progress -and in a fun way!

Be respectful and clear at the top of the interaction. State a simple intention. Convey with sincerity that the goal is to achieve the best possible outcome of good for every child and family in your class community. Reiterate the request for support and partnership from the family. Sometimes when least expected, a challenging parent may open up and confide deeply in their child's teacher. When that happens, it is always best to just listen and never judge that significant exchange. When the time comes to respond, show gratitude for the parent's trust. Move forward with kindness and grace.

Many students rose to the occasion, but a fair number of parents also complained. They wanted me to be more like one of the more senior teachers who had a better handle on work-life balance. I tried, but since I didn't have children, I struggled to fully understand and meet their demands. Looking back, I won an award, but I think it's important to consider the families desires--not just rigid goals. Classrooms need space for spontaneity and daydreaming because idle thoughts can lead to interesting outcomes. Yes,teachers should set the pace, but it's also good to remember that education is a co-effort.

It’s always important to loop in your supervisor and the child’s guidance counselor and through those channels set up a mediated conference. Be sure to provide documentation of student progress and behavior as well as all attempts made to communicate these issues with the parent. In most cases it’s a communication breakdown that is easily resolved, but if it’s not you have the support of people that have likely already dealt with the parent and have a better understanding and ways to approach the situation.

Let your administration know before you meet with a challenging parent. Remind yourself that you and the parent want the same thing - a successful, happy child. Parents need to know they can trust you to do your best for their child. Listen for the unspoken concern - if you can't figure it out, ask directly what it is that parents are concerned about, and what outcome they seek.
