You can learn from everyone! As a program and project manager in different areas of the organization, I relished opportunities to understand friction points from various perspectives. Curiosity and my passion for helping others reduce daily friction have provided unique and illuminating perspectives. HR team's mighty work is often overlooked or undervalued. As a cross-functional program or project leader, it's important to remember all areas of the business.

While transitioning at an early stage from a different field to HR, one must look to gaining first-hand Admin experience. Admin provides an exposure to lot many ground level activities. Admin activities are underrated but they help to give us a chance to cater to basic people queries and requests. Admin functioning also develops a quality of being organized. The other area to begin is recruitment, which is often taken up by freshers as an entry-level job, that gives a first-hand experience to develop communication skills as well as a basic understanding of the recruitment function.

Networking events in any industry are the best means to get yourself showcased so you can transition better. You can seek out experienced HR professionals willing to mentor. When you do, emphasize how your previous roles have prepared you for HR, such as team management, conflict resolution, and strategic planning, and of course share your desire for the transition.

I am passionate about the employee experience and always leave webinars feeling invigorated and full of renewed purpose. I often come away with new ideas, book and podcast recommendations, and connections. It's a great way to feed your mind and find community; many people are thrilled to mentor and collaborate.

If you're considering a career in HR, joining online communities and groups is a great way to start exploring the field without breaking the bank. Many groups offer free or affordable membership, providing valuable resources and connections. Some popular options include HRCI, Hacking HR, TroopHR, Safe Space, PeopleGeeks, TSOW, CultureFirst, Amplify HR, and Talent Community, among others. These communities are perfect for asking questions, learning from others, and getting a feel for the industry. Additionally, you can attend certifications, webinars, and networking events to further enhance your knowledge and skills. I have personally made some really good friends thanks to these platforms.

Transitioning to HR doesn't always require a formal HR certification. You likely already have transferable skills! My journey began with an enthusiasm for creating order from chaos through program and project management. This, combined with my natural curiosity and drive for efficiency, led me to work with a People and Talent leader who sought to bring more structure to a small but dynamic team. Through this experience, I discovered my true calling in HR/People & Talent.

Pursue your passion for HR without worrying about the outcome. Focus on the journey, enjoy the process, and learn as you grow. I transitioned from a developer role to HR many years ago, and my unique blend of skills has been a huge asset. For example- My technical background enables me to handle HRIS integrations and tech interviews with ease. Having been on both sides - as an employee and an experienced HR professional - I understand employee pain points and tailor my approach to address them effectively. Remember, you have transferable skills that set you apart. Leverage them to kickstart your HR journey!

An opportunity to learn and build HR skills can be found in your current organization. Offer your support to your HR team in areas they are focused on such as manager enablement, DEIB efforts, onboarding and training new hires, or even administrative support. Offering to lend a helping hand will allow you to learn about the day to day function and also give you opportunity to shadow what a day in the life of HR could look like. I am speaking from experience as this is how I eventually transitioned into an HR role; I designed a role to support our managers in training for their role and communicating company strategy and priorities via offsites and All Hands meeting and I spent the other time researching and learning about training.
