The field of information security is huge and constantly changing. When you start working in this field, your work will likely focus on what your company needs and does. You can become better at what you do by learning more about what interests you most. At the same time, working full time already takes up most of day. However, if you plan your day well, you can still find time to learn and grow. Also think about your family, friends, hobbies and free time. If you manage your time wisely, you can continue to learn while doing your job well. It may take some time, but it's worth it to get better at what you do.

Schedule, schedule, schedule. After I started my firm I felt that I had too much free time and thought starting a masters would be a good idea... While I love the learning (and confirming that apparently I do know what I am talking about) it is tough to co-ordinate client work, study, house, spouse, pets, friends, downtime, and sleep. You need to plan well and know what is due when from clients and uni and make time for all the things that matter. On the plus side, you will never be bored.

If you look at 100 pages of a book, you feel it's not so easy, but if you break it down into manageable realistic goals to study 5 pages a day then it's a 20 days job to read the entire book. so, the idea is , be consistent in your approach both for work and study and you will see that you don't need a formula, you need awareness , time management and consistency 🙏 that's it.

Something that I found very helpful is choosing your primary goal, for example, a certification, and splitting it into small goals. When each small goal is achieved, you will feel motivated by your progress, and before you know it, your main goal will be completed. It doesn't make it easier, but it makes it doable!

Setting smaller, attainable goals has helped keep me accountable and motivated. These smaller goals include completing chapters in my online courses, studying for a certain number of hours per day, carrying my flash cards with me to study on the go, and most importantly, writing down my goals so I can reference them. Once I start completing those goals, I feel more of a sense of accomplishment, and it brings me closer to my primary goal, which is obtaining a certification.

In my view, setting goals in Information Security education should go beyond traditional benchmarks. It's crucial to incorporate continuous feedback loops into your learning process. Utilize platforms that offer adaptive learning technologies which adjust the complexity and pace based on your performance and engagement. This personalized approach ensures that you're always challenged but not overwhelmed, fostering sustainable growth and deeper expertise in areas critical to your career advancement.

What has work for me in the past is targeting a specific role and get the certification related to that role. For example, if you want to be an Azure security engineer and is so passionate about it, you will learn what it takes to become a security engineer. You know that AZ-500 and SC-300 are key certification that is key to becoming an Azure engineer it will push you to learn what it takes to reach your goal.

When selecting courses or certifications, consider those that offer flexibility, such as online classes or programs that provide lecture recordings. Look for courses that align with the demands of your current work or future career aspirations in Information Security. This alignment ensures that the time invested in education directly benefits your career progression. In addition, choosing subjects that really interest you will make the learning process more enjoyable and less laborious.

What is your goal? Be realistic and ask yourself "why" or "why now". You need to be motivated not just riding a new fad. i.e. AI is all the rage, but is it something you actually want to study or are you being swayed by popular opinion? Having the right motivation is key to being able to complete a course, get a certification or new skill.

To start 1. Decide that if you want to grow in the same job role or switch to some other field eg: move to application security from risk management 2. Next look for certification which can provide the experience for your career boost 3. Always choose industry recognised certifications there are some good ones which aren't recognised yet though 4. Always keep learning! Keep looking up blogs, papers, events etc.

In our dynamic environment, keeping up to date is a must anyway. You can choose wisely and make it a win-win situation. You can even decide to take learning to the next level by volunteering in a professional organisation. If you organize continuous education yourself, the chance the topic is of interest to you grows.

Education is a life long journey. Just as we should never stop reading, we should never stop learning. Investing in your education will always yield results. I wholly agree with choosing courses that interest you.

Things I found helpful: 1. On setting a goal, for certifications for example I found setting a target exam date and actually booking for the exam is very effective. It enables focus when I have a deadline looming. 2. Setting a slot in your day when you can study, and studying that time helps with consistency and you get into a habit.
