Next approach you can have is building up your career in one area such as finance, marketing or commercial development so that you are not only fit for being an investor but also can be a hands-on commercial development , marketing or sales executive when it is required.

I think a résumé is super important. This might sound silly, but sometimes people have typos on their résumé, and I will immediately move on. Spellcheck for a résumé is essential. Even more important than the résumé is the cover letter. Being specific about why you want to work at a specific company is everything. If you can be specific about the role that you are applying for, and why you think you would be a good fit that’s even better. Personally, I look for potential and positive can-do attitude. Even if you don’t have the exact skill set, if you’ve got the horsepower and positive attitude, and do your homework on the company you are applying to, my bet is odds will be your favor. Good luck!

VC s tend to work together in groups - they co-invest together and have lots of work and social interactions -I would start building up your network of related VCs from day 1 and reach out to those other VCs quickly after the unfortunate event . Furthermore I would also spend time with LPs as they will know which funds are hiring and could be a great source of help/ information for next steps .

This is so important and it can be really challenging. I did not network for the first part of my career. I wish I had. Especially if you are busy working really hard to step up in your career, and for me, add three kids to the mix, it can be hard to find the time. I would say to make time the best you can. And to find events that really resonate with you. You don’t have to do one a week. But doing at least a handful a year is probably worth it. If you can make those events worthwhile to your employer, it can become a win-win. I co-wrote a couple books on personal finance years ago and never collected emails of the book fans, etc. I wish I did. Try to stay organized and log contacts, even if it is not your natural inclination.
