If it's a weekend program I can say with confidence after professionally coaching for almost 20 years, that you will not learn everything you need to learn to become a credible and prepared coach.

I so agree with this criterion of creating flexibility and accommodating course structures. In current times, it has gained prominence as a beginner has so much to consider and worry around.. balancing job and learning is a tightrope, balancing work and life is demanding and finally setting aside time to balance the theory with application is at the core too. If one is able to have flexible schedules, it’s certainly liberating.

I believe that there are three ways to accelerate learning 1- Having role models and mentors 2- Access to resources and 3- The quality of peer group one networks with. This enables taking the learning all the way to implementation and stretch it from classroom to reality. Coaching and all skill intensive domains work on all the above and each one is worth it’s weight in gold! Above three resources help understand clearly that we need not reinvent the wheel always:)

It is always important to visualize the complete picture - understand the different programs that are available for coaches - sometimes branding and credibility are more important than just certifications - work on the practice portion, just a certificate or program is not going to help you understand the different scenarios - be a master of a particular niche rather than trying to be a master of everything In my case, the brand building, focusing on giving back and becoming an author for my niche has helped kick start recognition quickly. So, come up with your own formula rather than sticking to rules !!

I have undertaken a few qualifications for coaching. If I'd gone in top end executive coaching (ILM 7), I may not have understood the fundamentals and theory behind it, different models etc. So I'd advise on taking a qualification which gives you a really broad experience of these (ILM5). Then you can move on and up with theory based models, as your course work will be on comparing theorists (from my experience). You can then use this to find your own stride and what fits with you as an individual which works best for your clients

How does a program feel about getting additional training outside the program? Do they encourage it or do they discourage it? Coaches benefit from a variety of training methods, philosophies and models.
