Conferences are a more formalised version of professional development where educators converge to engage in comprehensive discussions and knowledge exchange.

This is the most effective way to engage with our peers. The face to face communication will have much more advantages than connecting through social media. Of course, social media is one of the most effective mediums but still one to one communication will have much more leveraging.

In my experience, posting on LinkedIn about work projects has been a useful tool in connecting with other professionals. Seeing others’ projects and thinking of ways these initiatives can be beneficial at my institution is something that brings professionals from diverse backgrounds together. Simply put, putting students first is something that all student affairs professionals should do, regardless of the differences in our education, backgrounds, skills, and roles.

To me, this one is simple: use LinkedIn. I mean yes, there are teacher voices/influencers on other social media platforms, and they are good for some quick ideas, but they are more about reflection and seeing that someone else is going through the same thing you are. Only on LinkedIn can you actually get professional development and meet educators from all over the world. The exchange of ideas on this platform rival any other. If you are a teacher here, you should be encouraging every other person you know in education to not only get on LinkedIn, but engage!

Social networking sites are used to find people with similar interests and build relationships with them through discussions around these interests. How all things are connected provides a new, highly engaging and active life for created information. It no longer relies on a range of different tools to be spread; now, we can simply hit the ‘Share’ button and it will be available for all to see. To create a PLN, start by following others. They can participate in online chats and discussions, share their insights and resources, and engage with others by commenting, retweeting, and sharing content.

Be on the look out for Communities of Practices (CoPs), they are a great way to engage with peers from other institutions while being exposed to new learning opportunities and innovations in teaching.
