Here's how you can effectively convey mining engineers' strategic decisions to stakeholders.

Uma boa comunicação é a chave para alavancarmos a estratégia frente aos diversos públicos. Entender as necessidades de cada grupo é o primeiro passo para ser assertivo, sem rodeios. Mantenha a escuta ativa e seja empático - se colocando na perspectiva do outro.

Try to adapt the subject matter and delivery style to the objectives of the stakeholders. 1. Presenting weekly schedule strategy to production supervisors? Give details that maximise safety and productivity. 2. Emailing nearby businesses about upcoming blasting operations? Be concise and clear about the date, time and potential vibration impacts. 3. Issuing a design to an excavator operator with a distinctly important objective for the dig? Have a conversation with them and explain that this design is not normal, and requires special attention.

Para além do conteúdo, é essencial o cuidado na forma de comunicar. Enquanto a linguagem interna é mais técnica, junto ao publico externo é preciso falar de uma forma que pessoas que não são da área consigam entender.  Em conversas com o público amplo, evite usar muitos termos técnicos e siglas. Se possível, faça uma analogia. Por exemplo, ao explicar o conceito de commodities para os metais, associe também às commodities agrícolas, que são mais fáceis de assimilar. E teria melhor exemplo que um jogo de futebol para explicar estratégias defensivas?

Reducing jargon: Engineers sometimes forget to communicate with ordinary words and focus on using technical words. In as much as your listeners will be impressed, very few will buy into your idea. Simply because they don't understand it.

Giving loading instructions to a blast crew can be really simple sometimes. Things like through-seam blasting can get really tricky though, especially with deep holes intersecting multiple seams. Grouping and colour-coding holes with the same load rules, simplifies the complexity and empowers the blast crew. This reduction in mental load allows them to focus on safety and physical productivity.

A confiança é a base do diálogo. E esta só é conquistada com transparência e com a verdade radical. Tenha sempre em vista a construção de relacionamentos de longo prazo - e não diga ou faça nada que você se envergonhe de reafirmar no futuro, inclusive se confrontado. Não tenha receio de dizer uma verdade inconveniente - trabalhe na forma, com expressões sinceras e sem julgamentos. Acredite, se o interlocutor for digno de confiança ele irá apreciar sua atitude sobremaneira.

A regularidade é fundamental para garantir o entendimento, alinhar (ou mesmo realinhar) expectativas e demonstrar interesse genuíno quanto aos anseios de cada público. Determine uma frequência e adicione ao seu calendário, para que seja proativo e não reativo nesta comunicação.

As a drill and blast engineer, don't be afraid to jump on the two-way radio and ask an excavator operator how the fragmentation is on the blasted ground they're digging. I guarantee you that if you do this at a mine where the engineer has never asked for feedback before, you'll get some pretty colourful language in return! However, keep doing it, day after day. Soon the responses are more considered and productive. Instead of "it's harder than a bull's forehead, put more explosives in it next time" you'll get "this pass has been fine, but on the last one there was a bit of cap rock. It was pretty localised though..." This information is more constructive and enables you to investigate the problem and follow up, improving stakeholder buy-in.

É importante usar dados para fundamentar os pontos da mensagem, mas sem exageros. Enxurrada de dados pode soar como "argumento para imposição". Seja autêntico e também traga dados contrários à sua tese, antecipando os possíveis "riscos" e desavenças, e como um plano mitigador pode fortalecer ainda mais sua estratégia.

Do not overcommit: Be realistic, do not overcommit for the sake of keeping stakeholders happy. As much as you want to reassure them that you have their best interests at heart, you also don't want to be perceived as a professional with shortcomings. Overcommitting may lead to burnout and eventually getting nothing done, instead, look at what is within your circle of control and prioritise that.
