Here's how you can effectively prioritize tasks and meet resume writing deadlines.

This is agile project management at its finest. Taking your time to fully concentrate on each section of the resume will help you write in a digestible manner. Writing your resume can be a challenge, especially those with multiple roles and years of experience. This is a great approach to completing a well written resume.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 related to a resumes... 𝟏) 𝐂𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚 "𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞" before you actually need a resume... unless of course you were let go all the sudden. Having a base resume is the version that you will customize from for every resume you send out. 𝟐) 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 for that next job you're applying for! It is also crucial to save each version you send to each job that way when they do call you in for an interview, you can pull the version of the resume you sent them, and you will all be on the same page... literally and figuratively...

1/ Divide and Conquer: Break down the resume writing process into smaller, manageable tasks. This might include researching job descriptions, gathering information about past roles, drafting different sections of the resume, and proofreading. 2/ Create a Checklist: Develop a detailed checklist of all the tasks involved in writing a resume. This helps in ensuring that no step is overlooked and provides a clear path to follow.

Looking for a full-time job is a full-time job, and that job starts with your resume. Having a resume that not only reflects who you are but what you can bring to the table for the next employer is key. It is important to not only state that you are a great leader or salesperson, but you need to show it – “developed and executed go-to-market strategies for innovative technologies, resulting in a 40% market penetration in target regions.” “Led cross-functional teams in the development and launch of new products aimed at improving productivity, resulting in a 20% adoption rate within the first year.” Remember that your resume is a “living document,” it needs to grow and change as you do!

If setting deadlines is your thing, I suggest using the calendar on your phone to set aside time each day to work on your resume. I don’t always think creating a sense of urgency is a healthy approach but if it works for you, it works. Being intentional is moreso important, in my opinion.

Be realistic about the time required for each step and build in some buffer time for unexpected delays. 2/ Use Calendar Tools: Utilize digital calendars or project management tools to schedule these tasks and set reminders. This might involve turning off notifications, working in a quiet space, and setting specific work hours. 3/ Use Productivity Techniques: Employ techniques such as the Pomodoro Technique (working in focused intervals with short breaks) to maintain productivity and avoid burnout.

This is the most important part. You need to send your first draft to friends and family for feedback. After their feedback, make necessary edits and improvements. Someone shared with me they tend to keep a list/notes of projects or initiatives they worked on, updating this list around every 3 months with the intention of recording any new key responsibilities, skills, or specific work methods/achievements. To me, this seems like an effective way of enabling yourself to easily recall your professional experience throughout your tenure so that you have all the information readily at hand to transfer and tailor to your resume.
