In business and leadership, active listening is crucial for success. Initially, I struggled with the urge to respond immediately to complaints, hesitant partners, or indecisive colleagues. However, I learned that true leadership requires mastering active listening. I started by silently counting to maintain composure, especially with aggressive clients. Over time, this became a disciplined approach—where patience and understanding fostered meaningful connections. Honing these skills led to profound improvements in my relationships and effectiveness. Now, I prioritize giving others the chance to fully express themselves, ensuring everyone feels valued and understood. Create your own method to develop this skill, let people to feel important.

Active listening can be a tricky skill to master for some. A few easy, pressure-free ways to start practicing: 1. Listen to Audiobooks. While listening to podcasts is entertaining, the focus to maintain attention on audiobooks, without the back and forth of podcasts to recapture your attention, can really help you hone active listening skills. 2. Watching movies from the 1980s or before and pay attention to their nonverbals. Why pre-90s? Because once actors started getting Botox, their facial expressions -- an important part of nonverbal communication and important for active listening -- didn't ways convey what they were meant to (which isn't really great for their acting skills, either!)

Paying close attention entirely to the speaker, avoiding distractions and showing genuine interest. Drive the discussion further by asking open-ended questions. Allow the speaker/user to express themselves fully and avoid prematurely judging or offering advice. Summarize what the speaker has said and reflect it to them to demonstrate understanding and empathy.

Putting yourself in the shoes of someone you are communicating with and practicing empathy will help immensely to problem solve and come out of the conversation with a productive and positive outcome. A lot of times, we focus on our own feelings, and may end up jumping to conclusions about how someone else feels or thinks about US because we are staying in our own heads. Being able to listen actively and take time to understand the other person can allow you to step outside of yourself for a moment and pause your judgement to achieve a healthy interaction.

This skill can be developed through a mindfulness practice. When you feel an emotion, instead of acting on it immediately, identify what you're feeling -- happiness, anger, frustration, sadness -- without labeling it as a good or bad emotion... just the emotion. Taking this pause helps us not only to let the emotion run its course in our bodies, but allows us to take a step back and then respond from a place of calm. Developing this skill in ourselves not only helps us to be a better communicator, but helps us to notice and respond calmly when face with other's emotions, from a place of empathy.

Careful listening is the best strategy to get the best idea of a problem. Within the listening we can pick a way to solve the puzzle.

When active listening asking follow-up questions is key to ensure a shared understanding. Methods like the 5 whys can be helpful. I also like to say something like you said “x,y,z” tell me more about that. The real value in communication often sits a few layers beneath what is said on the surface level so hold your assumptions, repeat back what you have understood and ask clarifying questions.

Seeking clarification ensures that you fully grasp the details and nuances of the problem. Ask open ended questions so you can encourage the other person to elaborate on their concerns and goals they want met.

Clarifying is important. Sometimes what you hear is not the same as what was said. This also reassures the speaker that the listener is genuinely interested in them and is attempting to understand what they are saying.

And, by periodically summarizing your understanding during the conversations and making sure all parties are on the same page, versus waiting until the end, you will find your meetings and encounters more productive and efficient.

"One word" or a short statement is not too hard to coin to summarize a conversation. One has to be careful not to turn the summary into another lengthy engagement!

Proposing the greatest solutions becomes more relevant and well-received once we've actively listened to and comprehended the problem. This is because the best solutions are founded on a full comprehension of the issue's fundamental cause. In the process, customers will feel respected and heard, which will increase consumer loyalty and trust.

Before recommending any solution, first ask the person if they have a solution in mind. They might already know what they need or want in order to resolve the issue. By allowing them this space, you will solidify that their opinion and voice matters in the workplace.

This joint approach leads to better outcomes and empowers all parties by making them feel valued and heard throughout the problem-solving process. Talking to someone is a story, allow them to guide the story. Stay neutral and non-judgemental without making assumptions . Listen and create a space for them to share, usually the problem will become clear if you ask the right questions. Encourage the person to help contribute to the solution and adapt to them ☺️

As one sage observer noted, staying composed atop the Himalayas is straightforward, but amid chaos, it's an entirely different challenge. Mastering initial reactions is key before diving into active listening. I rely on the delay response method when confronted with aggression, I pause to quell immediate anger. Reacting hastily is counterproductive instead, I take a deep breath, often finding that silence speaks louder than a rushed reply. This approach helps me shift into active listening mode, fostering empathetic engagement with the other party.

EMPATHISE: For Irated customers:let the customer vent out the frustration. We can only explain our reasons to customer once they are in state of listening. Interrupting the customers when irated worsen's the situation. Listen carefull, try to relate with problem customer is facing. Show genuine empathy do not fake your emotions.
