After working for 6 years in a virtual setting due to distance from at least half of my team, I can confidently say that virtual teams can be successful. There are some difficulties with being in a different location from the rest of your team; however, when we focus on the idea of collaboration, virtual meetings have broadened the scope of what is possible. We can still meet and brainstorm real-time while seeing each other's expressions and excitement just as if we were in the room together. The "conference call" setting does not allow for the opportunity to easily identify who feels uncomfortable speaking over others or any type of discomfort because they cannot be seen. Being seen enhances the interactions between remote team members.

In my experience, virtual meetings have revolutionized the way we collaborate in a remote setting. By utilizing platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, we’ve been able to maintain a high level of interaction among team members. Establishing a clear agenda and encouraging active participation has been key to effective sessions. The ability to share screens and use digital whiteboards has also greatly contributed to our brainstorming and problem-solving efforts, making distance a non-issue in our pursuit of innovation and productivity. Managing discussions is more complex remotely, with overtalk and miscommunication frequent. Additionally, increased security risks demand robust protective measures. Organizations must navigate these issues carefully to maintain productivity and well-being.

Virtual meetings in some ways have made life simple which include - Travelling less (More time to study or spend with family) - Created new possibilities (Connection with more people who give new insights) - Multi-tasking (Needn't focus on every meeting that we need to attend) But there are some drawbacks even - Lack of motivation (Sitting alone in remote) - Taking it easy (No seriousness some times) - Missing the Expressions (Body Language).

In today's remote research landscape, virtual meetings play a pivotal role in enhancing collaboration among teams. Leveraging virtual meeting platforms allows researchers to connect in real-time, facilitating seamless communication and idea exchange irrespective of geographical boundaries. I'd go a step further from this. At my previous organization, I would use 'changelogs' similar to software updates. These short notes would summarise all changes made to a draft and require less time and effort of a reviewer going through your draft as opposed to full document reviews for every new version.

It is an easy way to work, as it has a simple structure; since my team is located in several jurisdictions and time zones, this tool allows us to keep up to date.

Instant Messaging Platforms for online communication. "Slack" is one of my favourite channels for quick questions and some informal interactions with our team. I also enjoy editing documents collaboratively with my research group on Microsoft teams. And Sharepoint for presentations!

There are a few challenges with the communication channels in remote collaboration, such as inconsistent Use of Channels, miscommunication, technical issues, timezone differences, lack of engagement, information overload and etc

Undoubtedly Slack and MST are great tool as a communication channel in a collaborative setup. But in my opinion the important factor of a channel is it's ease of use or how user friendly a channel is? So, specifically in a long-term collaborative setup, the continuous training of these channels will keep the team up-to-date and can bring more productive outcomes.

However, misuse of data or misinterpretation of data is crucial and required careful attention. Hence, the data should be handled carefully in a collaborative setup.

Another example is the use of interactive activities: Virtual workshops often include interactive exercises like brainstorming sessions with digital whiteboards, which engage participants and stimulate creative thinking

Acknowledging the importance of Live Workshops, the virtual Workshops are significantly important for the researchers living in remote areas. However, in a virtual setup, the role of the participants is crucial. In virtual workshops, onus of learning outcome should be on participants as it is a bit tough for the facilitator to drive the outcomes. Hence, active listening, proactive participations and healthy discussions will fetch a better outcome in collaborative research. Cost and time benefits are also there.

Virtual workshops have been the greatest way of cutting down expenditure especially in organizations and therefore improving turnovers and fostering growth. It is now easy to have workshops in areas where the team has skill gaps at the comfort of their working areas therefore minimizing the need and cost of travelling and accommodations for the members.

Very important here is training and engagement in an online Collaboration Tool. If everyone from staff is on board and builds an expertise in using a collaboration tool, work will be seemingly easier.
