My background is in architecture, but finally I made a plot twist to become a product designer. During the whole time of working on this field combined with the mindset of an architect. I realized an essential skill that all of successful designers have, that is empathy and understanding of user behavior. No matter which background you're from, if we want to persuade your clients, we must listen, observe and interpret their motivations, actions first. Especially in our field, it's essential for us when conducting user interviews, creating personas or mapping user journeys.

For example, your background in graphic and UI/UX design has honed your ability to understand user needs and create visually appealing, user-friendly interfaces. I think you have to be clear about what skills you have, what your interests are, your experience and even your shortcomings. All this background adds up to what each person can contribute to a discipline as versatile as UX Research. Furthermore, it is very important to get closer to the UXR community, to continue learning not only technical skills, but also essential skills and processes. I come from anthropology and social communication, and when I started at UXR I (1) looked for a community, (2) looked for written resources (and read, read, read), (3) looked for basic courses/videos/talks, (4) to soak up other people's experiences, and (5) never stop learning new things. All of this helped me to start in UX and to specialize in Research.

For example, a very useful quote which I learned from my teacher when I was an architecture student, is "a good composition always has primary and secondary elements and rhythm".
