Take the time to study both the roles and the many types of philanthropic organizations. This will allow you to map your current skills with those needed for roles in philanthropy. You can pair those skills with a cause or issue you care about to find a role that matches your passion and skills.

Learn the basics of why asking for money is a treat for you and the donor. Once you understand that, philanthropy becomes a great career. Your role may not be a frontline fundraiser working with donors, but everyone should understand the very basics of raising support--whether it be answering an email with a gift, sitting down to discuss something more substantive, or writing a grant.

Be intentional in all that you do. Rather than accept a role you do not understand or feel drawn towards doing, volunteer in the development/advancement office to ensure a fit. Read widely about role of your choice. Know the requirements, and do not apply for an outward facing role where you will need to build relationships and ask for funds, unless you get an intrinsic satisfaction in so doing. You will encounter a difficult person on occasion, but simply dust them off, as you do your shoes, and keep doing what you love: helping others. If you find a role you love to do, then you will never have to work a day in your life--you will just have fun. Obviously, this is an over simplification, but it is fundamentally true. Go have fun!

A wise colleague once told me he was often called upon as a reference and asked if the candidate could lead a development office and raise money. He used to respond that those were two very different skills and asked the employer to think about what they were truly seeking. It is important to recognize that leading a development office takes leadership and management skills, budgeting, diplomacy and board relations, and that leader may or may not also be a great solicitor. Finding out exactly what each role is, and clarifying with the organization exactly what they are seeking will be important for your success as well as the organization’s.

I started my journey as paid intern at a community foundation. That year taught me basic skills in grantwriting and working with an advisory board, both of which were invaluable later in my career. We got the gift (yes!) and the experience turned into a full-time position as a program officer (I later made a pivot into a development role in higher education). My encouragement is to remain inquisitive and volunteer for every opportunity that comes your way. Ask your supervisor (and anyone in the organization) about what they do, why they do it, and how it intersects with other parts of the organization. Approach each task with a can-do attitude to learn more about that area.

Gaining practical experience is key to building a successful career in philanthropy. Volunteer work, internships, and entry-level positions at nonprofit organizations or foundations can provide hands-on experience. This experience helps you understand the inner workings of philanthropic organizations and develop essential skills, such as project management, fundraising, and community engagement.

While obtaining my undergraduate degree I had several opportunities to work as a student in the alumni relations office and for the foundation. That exposure helped me decide that a career in nonprofit advancement was what I wanted. It served me well for 35 years in various roles in volunteer management, grant writing, major gifts, planned giving and leading and managing teams.

I'm not sure anyone as a kid says "hey, when I grow up, I want to be a fundraiser!" The fun thing about non profit work is that we often fall into these roles as we chase a passion or cause we care deeply about. In my case, post university nobody was hiring someone with no overseas experience, so I began with a mission organization as a volunteer on a two year agreement. Mission work is often "big vision, empty bank account" so my unexpected career as a fundraiser began with many amazing people willing to mentor along the journey.

Gaining experience is the easy part because most philanthropic orgs need volunteers and are more than delighted to delegate responsibilities. Once again almost everyone in an NPO is wearing multiple hats, so the help is always great. You'll gain insights into, hopefully, a cause you already care about and find deeper passion to make a difference.

It's also a great career path for previous practitioners. Are you an education administrator - consider a career in education philanthropy! Been a musician? Consider a career in music philanthropy. Just be ready to demonstrate your deep knowledge of systemic issues and potential solutions.

Pursuing relevant education can enhance your knowledge and credentials. Degrees in nonprofit management, public administration, social work, or related fields can be beneficial. Additionally, certifications in fundraising, grant writing, or nonprofit leadership can make you a more competitive candidate. When I first started working in higher education my boss was heavily involved in CASE—the Council for Advancement in Education. She made sure there were resources for me to attend annual conferences and workshops and eventually I served on our district conference planning committee. I made so many great connections which actually lead to my next position.

Social connections have real value in the NGO sector. Your network is equal to your assets and wealth during your career in philanthropy. So, don't be an introvert, even if you naturally are. Main donors often encourage partnership while you apply for support. Stakeholder management really matters. Begin with lightly networking with local peers and then see how new connections will fruit new projects.

Networking is essential in the philanthropic sector. Connecting with professionals through LinkedIn, attending industry events, and joining relevant associations can expand your network. Engaging in conversations, seeking mentorship, and participating in online forums can provide support and open doors to new opportunities. Networking helps you stay informed about job openings and trends in the field.

The great thing about many philanthropic organizations is that when you want to meet someone and discuss your business, they are willing because you are making a difference or doing something good in the world. This can open up a lot of doors and really help you connect with more people.

Considering the #Nonprofit / #Philanthropy sector contributes 5% to the US GDP, it can feel large & unwieldly, encompassing many sub-sectors like health, education, direct services, advocacy, grant-making, etc. If you think of your career like a business, you want to have a target or niche area of focus so you can a) focus your energy & skill-building and b) network more easily and ask for help, ideas & referrals to organizations that match your niche. For example, fundraising seems a ubiquitous skillset, applicable to any nonprofit. However, if your career focus is on youth development, your content knowledge and connections to donors, grant-makers and board members will make you a sought-after expert rather than a generalist.

Philanthropy encompasses various niches, including education, health, environment, and social justice. Exploring different areas can help you find your passion and align your career with causes that matter to you. Understanding the specific challenges and opportunities within each niche can guide your career path and help you make a greater impact.

With Artificial Intelligence (AI) on the rise, more opportunities and change are happening. Also, philanthropy tends to adapt or even stay ahead of cultural norms. There is so much growth in this field from trust-based philanthropy to DEI and ESG inclusion. Be willing and able to grow, change, adapt, embrace and even empower communities through these changes. That’s the true power of Philanthropy!

The philanthropic sector is dynamic, with evolving needs and trends. Staying adaptable is crucial for long-term success. Continuously updating your skills, staying informed about industry changes, and being open to new roles and responsibilities can enhance your career growth. Adaptability ensures you remain relevant and can effectively respond to the changing landscape of philanthropy.

Two initial steps are crucial #1 - Understanding the various career paths. Similar to for-profit entities, philanthropic organizations have several functions. Program work (which can include grant making or even fundraising). Grant writing, communications, research, evaluation, learning, and a huge function that keeps the trains running - Operations. #2 - Figure out the issue areas you are passionate about. From global health, to gender equality, to economic mobility - there is a philanthropic mission in every sector. Once you determine the career path and issue area, narrow down organizations with those opportunities.
