One most important thing to always remember is that there is no problem without a solution. So, for every setback/problem encountered there is a solution awaiting discovery.

Embracing failure is definitely one way of fostering resilience in Computer Science students. As they say; if you've never failed in anything, you've never tried anything new. In my four years at uni, I failed a bunch of units, one being a unit that introduced me to computer programming. It was disheartening at first, being my first failure in an exam at college. I accepted that I had failed and adjusted accordingly. Now that it was a prerequisite to resit a failed unit, and which was extremely expensive for me (considering my financial status), I picked myself up and on the second attempt, I passed the unit with flying colours and was extremely happy. Had I not embraced that failure, I wouldn't have been able to try anything new tech wise.

As I was coming out of school and searching for my first job, I wanted to write programs that would be used in a business, and I could see these people using them. As long as the humans remain in charge, this is still the goal! I remember one example very well. In my first job we had a training program, and in one of the projects we had to write a program to play a card game. Our programs had to shuffle the cards, and computers don't do random things without being taught. I still remember how I did it.

While working on real world projects, a computer science student should be able to define the business problem clearly and know what needs to be improved. This sounds obvious but it is critical to have the problem well articulated. Additionally I have come across instances when the student delves deep into the technology aspect of the problem and may love the process of problem solving but the practical feasibility or accuracy of the solution is not addressed sufficiently. This is particularly true for AI, ML kind of projects.

Continuously increasing difficulties are much like the process of making a fine painting. At first you have only the basic materials ideas & skills that serve as foundation & as time goes by, you complete simpler projects step by step, they become perfected into more complex forms.This systematic development allows for the gradual enhancement of your skills & knowledge whereby more intricacy is added to a picture or sculpture. Progress can be interpreted as incrementally mounting trust with regards to the strength of your aptitudes reinforced for the future misfortunes head on approach. It is journey on which setbacks are understood as areas for further perfecting your skill at times equivalent to overcoming hurdles in pursuit of perfection

When I started learning programming, I began with simple exercises like printing "Hello, World!" and basic arithmetic operations. As I grew more comfortable, I gradually moved on to more complex tasks, like building small applications and solving algorithm problems. This step-by-step progression built my confidence and skills over time. One memorable moment was when I finally solved a difficult algorithm problem after weeks of trying simpler ones. Each small success prepared me for bigger challenges, making setbacks less daunting and learning more enjoyable.

Reflecting on what went wrong is really crucial. Either it is rejection on your job application or it is rejection by a freelance client, reflecting on yourself and your skill set is really important. If it's job application, try to gain feedback from the hiring manager or in case of client, try to gain feedback from the client about how you can improve. Even in the days of success, trying to consistently improve can take your career very far. Reflection in the days of success, doing small improvements will always keep you ahead of the competition.

Finally, reflective practice is key to developing resilience. After completing a task or project, take time to reflect on what you learned, what you could have done differently, and how you overcame difficulties. Of course, it's important not to become a puppet of the organization. It's crucial to stay true to your heart and connect with people on a personal level. But when you find that sweet spot where your passions intersect with the company's objectives, that's where the real magic happens.

Aside from everything mentioned here, I believe the most important is to stop comparing yourself. As a student, you'll see different types of people. You'll start doubting whether Computer Science is right for you. It can be very disheartening when you are new in the field, seeing other students having a plethora of git repos and projects, while you're struggling to understand simple things. If this is what you want to do, you have to stop looking at others and focus on self-improvement. And if you end up thinking this isn't for you, that's fine too. It's never too late to change careers or study programs.

Shockingly, good leadership seems missing from this list. I know the question is explicitly about students, but there's a lot of leadership that applies to teaching as well. If students feel they're going to be punished every time they get something wrong, they're going to avoid things that aren't easy for them. This is also true for employees. A healthy environment, either in education or in work is one where mistakes aren't treated too harshly and rather people promote values like working through problems that come up.
