I think it is very important to have at least some basic understanding about other people's backgrounds and to experience them yourself. Go out of your comfort zone and spend time with people of different cultures/beliefs/ideals/etc. It generally is a fun and unique experience (even if a bit awkward at times), but it will help you grow in how some people communicate/work differently than others.
