Internship is all about learning. Take an opportunity that has all the element from basic to advanced. Candidates often relate Internship as something where they will sit in conference room and create a strategy to launch new market or add a new factory. Even if it is that, take time to go to the market for one week and complete the sales target like a sales person of the related product. The insights you will gain by talking to the customers and consumers is what will help you in the conference room. I used to stand and operate shift of a production line as i created the plan to improve the efficiency.

Don't just apply to any internship. Look for opportunities that align with your career goals and leadership aspirations. Research companies or organizations known for fostering leadership development [e.g., leadership development programs, mentorship opportunities]. To that end, non-profits are a wonderful first landing to accomplish a higher purpose and one that turns the eyes of future hiring managers. When I review resumes, many times young candidates that lack experience can distinguish themselves by showing an internship at a non-profit that seeks to improve the lives of those around them.

When the CFO of the company addressed us during the welcome dinner, I was the only intern from our Technology Division who asked a question, this helped me to stand out. Find ways to add value. The advice I give interns who have worked with me is that the best leaders are those who have done the "grind" while working their way up. Be willing to get your hands dirty and burn the midnight oil. There is no job too small. Even today successful leaders are ready to roll up their sleeves and get things done. This is very important.
