Here's how you can get ready for behavioral interview questions.

1. Spot questions - by looking at your experience and what the JD asks for. I tell myself "I think I'm being interviewed because I've got A, B, C" - and then I try to reflect on my experience/challenges/solutions pertaining to A,B, and C, etc etc. 2. I've always believed that STAR is useful, but that the believability, fluidity of the narrative is also super important - this goes toward authenticity, and likeability. 3. Be calm and thoughtful on the outside while your brain rapidly formulates an answer. Brain first, mouth thereafter (not the other way round) 4. Practice your narratives - friends, coaches, and address valid blind spots. 5. Time yourself - I honest think that circa 3 mins is enough to give a punchy answer. Good luck!

The STAR method is indeed the star of addressing behavioral questions by providing a clear insight into how you interact in particular situations and how you deliver results. However in my experience, I see many focusing more on the S and the T than on the A and R, hence the importance of practicing the framework and making sure that the answer conveys clearly the results achieved so that the interviewer(s) get a sense of how result-oriented you are.

Apart from understanding STAR method which is the fulcrum of any BBI, It is important to be genuine and authentic in your responses and ask for feedback on your responses from someone you trust, such as a career coach, mentor, or colleague. They can provide valuable insights and suggestions for improvement. Also, quantify the results of your actions to demonstrate the impact you had. Use numbers, percentages, or other measurable outcomes to make your accomplishments more tangible.

Answering behavioural interview questions requires knowing the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) technique. Structured STAR helps you effectively discuss past experiences and how you addressed them. Define the Situation and provide background. Then, describe your task. Next, describe your task-related actions, emphasising your role and contributions. Finally, discuss your actions' beneficial effects and lessons learned. Mastering the STAR approach ensures organised and effective responses that show potential employers your problem-solving and achievement skills.

Often, while working with my coachees to reflect on their experiences, some get stuck on one or two examples and can't think of other situations. One often overlooked source of information to refresh memory is past performance review documents. It is important to save those documents and keep them handy, they can serve as a gold mine of information on past achievements and patterns' reflection. Another aspect to consider is tapping into personal experiences when professional ones do not apply. If well presented this adds a solid, personalized human layer to the interview conversation.

Preparing for behavioural interview questions requires deep introspection on your past. Review your career and find crucial occasions when you displayed relevant skills and competencies. Consider your struggles, how you overcame them, and what you learned. Deep reflection helps you choose the best interview examples. This preparation gives you confidence and a wealth of anecdotes demonstrating your skills, making your answers more persuasive.

You can also consider asking people close to you for input - what are situations they remember where you showed a particular skill or knowledge or mindset? We sometimes forget about situations where we left a deep impression with others. By having conversations with peers, team members etc. you can receive valuable input and identify common themes. And this can also boost your ability to tell a confident story, because it’s been confirmed by people who’ve been there with you.

Practice as much as possible without learning by heart, word by word. As I sit in some interview panels, I see candidates with solid experiences, yet their answers are "over-practiced" to the point of sounding emotionless, which does not convey any enthusiasm.

That goes without saying, authenticity is crucial from start to finish, or I would say, to forever. It is normal and important to intend to leave a good impression on the interviewers, yet it is even more important to keep in mind that the biggest answer to all behavioral questions is your attitude and your values reflection during the interview. Even more, when it comes to weaknesses, being authentic does not mean to self-deprecate, it is rather about framing them as identified areas of improvement that you are self-aware of and working on to improve them. The interviewer will be more interested in your growth and improvement mindset than in your weaknesses per se.

I've conducted hundreds of interviews in my career, I can say I am greatly impressed with individuals who know important information about the company/job/industry. Tailoring STAR responses involves aligning responses with company values, recent achievements, and industry trends, for example. For instance, if the company values innovation, highlight projects where you implemented creative solutions. If they prioritize diversity, discuss experiences promoting inclusivity. Addressing industry challenges, like digital transformation, showcases your understanding of their needs. This personalized approach demonstrates your alignment with the company's goals and makes you a standout candidate.

Be optimistic during preparation and responses to make a favourable impression in behavioural interviews. Even when talking about setbacks, frame your experiences positively. Explain how harsh events helped you grow. Positive attitudes demonstrate perseverance, optimism, and a proactive approach, which employers value. Positive responses can also make you more remembered and engaging to interviewers, improving your performance.

Put Step #5 first! For the interviewer, any interview is about how well you can solve THEIR problem. Dive deep into the job requirements, culture, and needs of the organization. Then combine STAR - see above, the way you tell your experience - with linking the examples you share to the job requirements and the values of the company. In addition, see the interview of a two-way dialogue: Ask questions, interview them, and show your curiosity and genuine interest in their situation. Be clear on YOUR values and your must-haves, so you can have a fruitful conversation and ensure a mutual fit for the position.

As an HR professional with 25+ years of experience, my advice for mastering the STAR method is to make your responses conversational. Rather than rigidly stating the Situation, Task, Action, and Result, weave them into a compelling story. Describe the context vividly, clearly define the task, explain your actions with purpose, and highlight the impactful results. Engage the interviewer by making it feel like a natural conversation. The best candidates make STAR seem invisible, showcasing their skills through seamless storytelling. Always aim to engage and impress! (Bonus: Practice makes perfect.
