In my experience I feel it is very essential to understand the basic principles of oil & gas business. Interaction with experienced personnel and hands on working would give an edge to excel in the sector. No one can replace the knowledge gained through practical experience. If one is sound in basic principles it is easy to understand core nuances of the industry and can help in proactively excelling!

The midstream for the molecules (oil or gas) is usually the most complex art and science. It entails conversion or refining to saleable products, storage and transportation. Downstream is mainly marketing and services.

Midstream: focuses on transportation, storage, and wholesale marketing of crude oil and natural gas. While Downstream focuses on refining crude oil and the retail distribution of petroleum products.

In my opinion, Step 1 is having an inquisitive mind. Once you get curious and are driven to learning then it's really down to seeking opportunities that take on your current skill set to the next opportunity. Some people are skilled in consulting, law ,supply chain or project management but aren't in oil and gas ,however these skill set are valid in the sector. A move there opens one to the modus operandi and that is the start of discovery. I also think this works for moving across streams in oil and gas.
