Strategies are long term plannings in place to achieve vision or big goal. Failure in one or more strategies doesn't means failing in your vision. It is similar to losing battles doesn't mean losing a war. We only fail in strategies if they are left unattended and not changing our actions or objectives based on new realities. Also failure is an opportunity to learned from mistakes and come back stronger.

The acknowledgment of emotions in the business world is a necessary requirement. It is needed for you to grow personally and professionally, as well as have the ability to realize that failure was needed for future success. I think it is also important to realize that your clients also have emotions, and the ability to convey a failure while emphasizing future success is key to a healthy working relationship.

Treating emotions as a weakness in business strategy is a flawed approach. While acknowledging emotions is seen as a crucial step, it's equally important to harness those emotions as fuel for resilience. As Elon Musk once said, "When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor." Embracing your emotional responses can drive the motivation to overcome setbacks. This not only humanizes the process but also cultivates a deeper connection to your goals. Harnessing emotions can be the catalyst for turning failures into pivotal learning moments.

Failure is a powerful teacher, but the lessons can be tough to swallow. Back when I was starting out, I poured my heart into a new venture that ultimately flopped. I was crushed, but after some reflection, I realized I hadn't done enough due diligence. That failure taught me to always validate ideas before diving in headfirst. Now, I use it to encourage my team to reframe failures as opportunities for growth. Analyze what went wrong with curiosity instead of judgment. What insights can we gain? How do we adjust going forward? Embracing failure as a natural part of the process builds resilience and sets us up for future wins. Never let those missteps keep you down. The most important thing that you can do is understand the failure. And a key part of understanding failure is doing a root cause cost analysis. I normally use the 5 WHY method to find the root cause. This is where I keep asking myself "why?" until I can no longer answer that question. One important aspect is that when there's multiple root causes, you need to understand what are internal (that you can control) and what are external (that you cannot control). Remember that at the end of the day, you should ONLY spend your energy and effort in the things that you can actually affect or control.

Beyond defining what the root cause is of the failure, the second most important thing is that you create a plan or a countermeasure of what you're going to do differently in the future, so that failure does not reoccur again. There are going to be things that are going to be under your control and things that are not going to be under your control Thus, make sure that you understand what are the things that you need to control in the future in order to prevent the failure from repeating. Also understand what external forces you need to keep an eye on to understand if the failure might repeat, even if you can't directly affect these forces.

Any failure in your professional life or in your personal life is bound to create a lot of emotions. Therefore, make sure that you have the support system to get you through all the emotions that you're going to feel. Make sure that you don't suppress those emotions, but that you actively manage those emotions so that you don't end up making more mistakes because of what you're feeling.

Seek input from your support network to gain different perspectives on the situation. They may offer insights, advice, or alternative viewpoints that can help you gain a broader understanding of what happened and how to move forward.

To manage emotional expectations, I set "Failure Targets" for every goal. Failure Targets act like a stop loss in investing. When you buy a stock at $100, you can set a stop loss of 10% so that if the stock drops below $90, you would sell it and invest elsewhere. This helps manage your risk and retain more of your investment. The same applies to failure targets. A success target may be "10 new customers per month from linkedin" while the failure target is "2 new customers per month from linkedin". So if I get 3 or more customers, I know that I should keep working on this goal and don't need to feel bad. But if I only get 2, I should consider pivoting because what I'm doing isn't working. Methodical failure manages emotional expectations.

Develop contingency plans to address these risks, reducing stress and allowing you to react calmly if they arise. You'll feel more prepared and in control. Build-in Buffer Time: Allocate buffer time in your project timelines to account for unforeseen challenges. This buffer reduces pressure and allows you to adapt your strategy as needed without feeling overwhelmed. You'll have the space to navigate setbacks calmly. Set Realistic Expectations: Establish achievable goals & milestones. Setting yourself up for success reduces the likelihood of disappointment and fosters a sense of accomplishment. You'll build confidence as you achieve your targets.

You must let go and lower down of your ego, face the truth, hence fewer limitations you have on your reactions, and the less attached you are to your desired outcomes.

Every failure can be difficult, does not matter in what. It is easy to say, "just learn from it", if you do not know how to do it. What I have learned to use is "critical distance", let me explain why: Dealing with failure through critical distance involves stepping back and analyzing the situation objectively. It helps in understanding the reasons behind the failure without emotional bias. By distancing yourself, it's easier to see the broader context, identify patterns, and learn from mistakes. Critical distance builds a mindset of growth rather than defeat, allowing you to turn setbacks into valuable lessons. Ultimately, it transforms failure into a stepping stone for personal and professional growth.
