Here's how you can navigate the future of nonprofit leadership as a mid-career professional.

It is important to expand nderstanding by participating in both for-profit and nonprofit enterprise. For example in the for-profit environment energy is focused on innovation and knowing theway to make profis. Nonprofit often is focused on the mission, relationship to funding sources, and stability of process. While the focus for for-profits is on improvement and innovations for process it may be offset by the dominating priciple of profit. For those navigating the nonprofit career it is vital to listen, do research, and become the eager right hand to volunteer for additional work opportunities.

While the outlined strategies for nonprofit leadership are comprehensive, they may not always be practical or effective for all organizations. Constantly embracing change and fostering innovation can lead to instability and burnout among staff. Additionally, an overemphasis on technology and networks might overshadow the core mission and values of the organization. It's important to balance these strategies with a focus on maintaining stability and consistency in operations, ensuring that the primary objectives of the nonprofit are not compromised.

Stay updated with industry trends and emerging technologies through professional development courses and certifications. Build a strong network by engaging with peers, mentors, and industry leaders at conferences and online forums. Seek leadership roles or projects that challenge you and expand your skill set. Emphasize innovation and impact in your work, and be open to new ideas and approaches. Prioritize self-care to maintain resilience. By staying informed, connected, and flexible, you can effectively lead and drive change in the nonprofit sector.

Success is built on relationships. In the nonprofit sector it’s crucial to connect with folks from a variety of sectors in order to be more efficient and to attract additional resources.

Build them, but bot superficially. Do not overlook the opportunity to truly get to know people. Often times in networking we exchange business cards and simple pleasantries and go about our business. That is not building anything, that is simply collecting bricks. To build a network that will withstand change you must seek to know people, not just what people can do for your or your non-profit. Building anything requires a foundation, which requires digging deep. So take the time to dig deep, let people know you care about what they do, who they are and what motivates them not just in work but in life. Build a home for your network, where they can go to get refueled, not just hand you money or help you out. Build it to last.

Strategically leading your organization, team and community with innovation creativity, equity and inclusion means you must continually engage your stakeholders in your decisionmaking and problem-solving. Creating a safe space for communication, engagement, ideas and conversation promotes thought leadership and relevance. This can spur breakthroughs in how you tackle social issues. Staff, community, customers and participants should feel safe to experiment and fail. The development environment for team members must include their perspective and their voice with resources for professional development that are culturally relavant and value diverse perspectives. A learning, culturally relevant, socially conscious space fosters innovation.

The first of the 7 pillars of Passionate Leadership that I developed is "A Deep Appreciation of Self and Others". A deep appreciation means you value and cherish both yourself and others and create an environment in which you can all be and do your best. In my experience, leaders are often their own worst critics and thus have difficulty empathizing with others. Empathy for self goes hand in hand with empathy for others.

Empathy and compassion are core attributes of inspired leadership. Leaders, teams, and organizations can be too goal-focused and hard-driving. To work best over time, individuals, groups, and companies require focused attention on how they are operating and not only their outputs. Paying attention to emotions—our own, others, and the collective—practicing curiosity, and determining how to respond to the information they provide helps us reflect, reframe, and redirect. We do well when we allow ourselves to become aware of what comes up and what is available in the present moment. Unfortunately, without knowing it we spend very little time there. When we are present, we expand what is possible, which includes empathy and compassion.
