I believe all companies should have programs that look after your wellbeing in a proactive way. But until we get there here are some things to know. 💥EAP and medical are not special offers all companies should give you that (at least in Canada). Instead ask: 1/ is profession training free, how and when is it offered? 2/ What do you offer in terms of “burnout support”. If they have a response at all that’s a good sign. If they don’t have a program; classes, apps, workplace boundaries ask questions like… Am I expected to respond to emails after hours and on weekends? Do you support flexible hours what parameters are acceptable? (Like driving outside of rush hour) Be open to their needs but ask early to avoid frustration.

It is very important to have clear understanding of what is important to you, and as an extension, to your family. Once you have identified your non-negotiables then it is easier to go into the negotiation as you have clearly identified your boundaries. Whilst medical insurance might be critical for some, ability to buy additional holidays or work remotely can be for others. So always analyse your personal situation first, separate the must haves from nice to haves, and then go into the negotiations.

If companies want to retain talent they should be looking at what competitors in the industry or across supplementary industries offer.
