As far as Pharmaceutical R & D is concerned, start working anywhere (as entry is important), as you get experience you will start liking what you work on or any other divisional SBU of R & D, start learning that field, get a mentor who is specialist in that field, do some additional courses in that field, examples of various SBUs would be, IPR, RA, Quality, Project Management, Business Development, ADL, Synthesis and Formulation. Each of these are broad and can be focused further to, API, Formulation, Innovation (small molecules, Biosimilars, peptides), further R & D itself can be Single in-house R & D organization or CRO or CDMO, each requiring slightly different expertise. Develop a Broad Knowledge with expertise in inter-field skills.

Look for advanced technologies in your particular domain Second look your own skill which you have and try to enhance them Third try to work on projects that are going to be future for upcoming generation Work with people or organisations who is working on cutting-edge technologies
