I think Architects are more towards the blueprint, than the actual bricks and cement! Hence in my opinion, spend your time on understanding the Design/architecture, dependencies and future feature expansions of the current setup. Think from a wholistic approach and try to factor the modules/changes which are to be optimize to get a better outcome. Having said that, it is not great to completely avoid the programming and engineering dependencies. Architects are the people who usually do not build the system by themselves, but they are a good scholar of overall design, components and processes.

I agree with the aspect to gain knowledge if you want to move from Software Engineer to System Architect. But one key thing to understand here is that technologies are evolving continuously. So you will need to keep yourself up to date. Further it is important to bind old and new technologies. So just don't blindly think that the latest technologies is always best. Sometimes you may just need a portion of the latest technology while merging with existing knowledge. Lastly knowledge without application is just theory. If possible, try them in the real world to actually grasp the difference between theory and practice and this is where experience actually comes in handy.
