In filmmaking, one thing I have found to be incredibly helpful is the power of storytelling. 100%. Creative and business aspects are equally important. It's called the film INDUSTRY. It's show BUSINESS. There are crucial business aspects alongside the creative artistry. Building skills in the business side as well as the creative part is super important.

There is nothing more important than putting your hands in it. Dealing with the problems and issues that come up on a daily basis when you are shooting, is the real test of your soft skills and cannot be taught at school. A hard day on set can be much more effective than one year on the university.

"Learn on the job" I think this is one of the most valuable ways of learning. Ultimately, there are some 'rules' that you could learn in a classroom. But applying them, and also knowing when to break them, is crucial. This is something that you only learn "on the job"!

I say devote yourself to as much experience in a certain niche, without jumping around from one job to the other until you have gone through the trenches to experience the different aspects that each job has to offer.

It is a great thing to learn from people who have "been there and done it" Insider knowledge has to be learned in one of two ways. Going and doing it OR learning from someone who has. And then when you have learnt the lessons you need to learn, the mentor may disappear. Why? Because you are now ready, on your own accord, to take the lessons out into the world, by yourself. A good teacher knows this!

Mentor appear more than I would have imagined. It’s all about allowing someone who’s been there to be heard and seen for the hard work they put in. Sometimes it can be a like mindedness, similar taste, similar hobbies or simply a liking towards you. Whatever it is, value it and nurture the relationship. It’s always rewarding to see what comes of the honest friendship after you have shared your ups and downs.

Reading the trades is important, but so is reading about where things are headed and how to direct yourself to where the industry or a project is going, rather than having to catch up for being late.
