My previous employer used to tell me that I was good at data entry and that I should consider a career in it. I did not agree with her, as I only learned those skills because it benefited my position. I took the time to really learn electronic health record systems like NextGen and Microsoft Excel because it made my job easier to see where we were and where we needed to be. It’s a huge plus when interviewing because you already have firsthand knowledge, which is one less thing that someone has to train you on.

Ne jamais cessez d'apprendre. Durant toute ma carrière, c'est ce que j'ai fait avec des formations en présentiel, des conférences, des livres, des formations en distanciel ou en ligne. Apprendre permet de rester attentif, alerte, à jour et de conserver une belle agilité et une capacité à s'adapter aux situations. Il n'y a que des bénéfices.

Be a self-leader. Don’t wait for others to lead or guide you. Look for opportunities to create value. Attend webinars. Read articles. Be curious. Ask questions. Remember. “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. It will take time to gain expertise, but over time your effort will pay off!

Networking is often thought of as a dirty word, or a necessary evil. Find your tribe. Volunteer for a cause you support. Participate in your community, kids school, or religious community. When you start connecting with people and activities that are meaningful to you, you’ll enjoy networking more!

Try to get value from the connections you make, but don’t forget to add value to the other person too. Deliberate and meaningful support helps you to increase your competency but also your motivation.

You should be good at presenting yourself or the work you did - Showcase your achievements and challenges that you faced - build a strong network or audience on social media like LinkedIn - Let them know that you are quick learner, adaptable to change, execute fast

We often think of WHAT we want to do, but not WHO we want to be. Branding is how you show up in the world. It may be how you dress, or speak, but it’s also about your character. Are you reliable? Do you keep your word? Are you kind or consider the well being of others? Your character is part of your brand too.

Most people struggle with being adaptable. Change can be difficult. And being open to new ideas can feel threatening. Noticing when you are not adapting well is a start. Take a breath and pause. Consider what’s happening. Ask yourself about the best options given the current situation. Then make the best fully informed decision possible,

Get to your workstation or office early. Use the tranquillity of the near empty space to marshal your thoughts, jot down ideas, prioritise your working day or check for urgent emails. Then hit the day running.

Authenticity and integrity. Be yourself in the full knowledge that if you're who they hired, you're who they expect to get, complete with all your gifts, talents and creative originality. People-pleasing and bending to the will of others will earn you zero respect, burn you out and will never establish you as a thought leader. Employers, for the most part, are looking to hire people who can help their business grow. If your authentic self is not appreciated in your current workplace, you compromised yourself when you took the job. No judgement, it's just time to choose again... My philosophy has always been to be diligent, adaptable and passionate about getting the job done.
