Lets think Deep... If you are a systems applications developer you would need a good understanding of the OS that you are writing the first version of your application. Then comes the portability aspect. You should try to find the SDKs for specific OS/platform that is the target for your application to be ported on. Many times drivers & other low level applications would use direct Assembly instructions / Mnemonics which will certainly have issues when executing on other platform. Often there is a large effort involved. So a platform porting projects in the OEM's & Technology Products houses is seen as a critical & have best minds in the room.

Set up a VM with OS and applications that work. Then setup a VM with the target OS version. Install and run each application one step at a time. Often the problem is with changed libraries. Strace is a very handy tool to debug compatibility issues.
