An example I've seen is to be an executive in board and being the player who will make decisions and lead the team. You must involve in all decisions at your organisation. You must attend other business forums. Build relationships with other company board members as well. Master the thing what you do. Always watch the industry trends. See the view macro view of the industry you work for and ensure you take the correct decision always.

For example, I've been mentoring (now a ) friend personally and professionally over the years. Today, his startup is in demand, with big-ticket investors vying to reach them. The key to our relationship was his consistent approach—he would take notes and always come back to me after carrying out the advice. This mutual respect and follow-through are what make mentorship truly impactful.

I'm always flabbergasted at the number of people who ask me to give up hours of time and never even offer- sorry a coffee doesn't cover the time, effort or energy it will take to mentor someone long term. Sure it's controversial to have this take- but then again you get what you pay for.

Become infectious in sharing your knowledge and experience in your industry. If you are not a 100% at your subject matter then become one. Become a regular speaker at all relative events and polish up your script and presentation so that you could deliver it with confidence and ease (even if the slide show crashes). Become a major ambassador of your product. 'Know The Market, Know the Customer and Know your companies company menu of products. Focus, focus and focus on that product, don't attempt to sell something not on your menu. Connect with your team on the vision and in bringing them along with your plan. Network with executives smarter than yourself and be a sponge for their wisdom and experience.

T type leaders that show expertise in breadth of transferable horizontal as well as functional skills are usually sought after - irrespective of industry. In general at executive level, skills such as people management, project management, executive management, stakeholder management, communications, strategy formulation etc count for a considerable amount of weighting, and in some cases, supersede functional industry specific skills requirement. If you want to change sectors though it is likely to come from a recommendation within your own associated network.
