More than a methodology “to be implemented” because “management believes is a good idea” its all about generating the right workplace for employees to work, a mindset at all levels that helps to reduce the distractions that are kept and that influence in how we perform our activities. Eliminating unnecessary items (Sort), Defining a place to what is needed (Set in order) and collecting best practices used to be shared and copied (Standardize) helps to boost productivity in daily activities. While being able to maintain it (Shine) and ensuring a process to improve it and assess it (sustain) is all about culture, mindset and leading by example. Começando pela etapa de "Seiri" (organização), eliminamos itens desnecessários, reduzindo a chance de erros e facilitando a localização de materiais. Em seguida, "Seiton" (arrumação) garante que tudo tenha um lugar designado, minimizando o risco de misturas ou perdas. A etapa de "Seiso" (limpeza) não apenas promove um ambiente de trabalho seguro, mas também ajuda a identificar problemas potenciais, como vazamentos ou falhas em equipamentos. My trainer taught me that, 5S is nothing but a basic human culture. Culture forms from habits. Habit becomes by doing things regularly. It can be in either way. 😄 And sorry to say, it was already in practices at our home even before born of 5S. 😞 Well, 5S is a systematic methodology for organizing the workplace to create a more efficient, productive and safe environment.

This methodology outlines steps to efficiently and effectively organise a workspace by identifying, sorting, and maintaining items used, as well as sustaining the newly established organisational system. Typically, decision-making regarding standardisation fosters dialogue among employees, promoting a shared understanding of how tasks should be executed.

For quality improvement and defect reduction, we need to visualize them first, 5S is the tool that helps us identify and visualize abnormalities that have the potential to lead to quality defects. We even say that without 5S, achieving zero defects is only a dream.

To put it simply based on my hands on experience, a well-organized and efficient workspace reduces the likelihood of errors, making it easier to identify and rectify issues promptly. This in turn contributes to improved quality and fewer defects in processes and products.

5S, a basic tool of visual management, helps to see at a glance abnormally. A proper and well organized working place should increase productivity and reduce scrap rate.

It gives structural approach on workplace. 5S is cultural foundation of manufacturing excellence for any industry. It helps workplace team to understand manufacturing excellence.

One thing that's very important when implementing 5S is support from the top. If you don't have it, then it's almost impossible to get your 5S event successful.

Implementing 5S in your workplace is a team effort that involves a systematic approach .Identify the areas and processes you want to improve with 5S. Set clear goals and metrics to measure your progress .Educate your staff about the benefits of 5S and train them on how to implement it. Make sure everyone understands their role in the process.Get your team involved in planning and executing 5S. In the workplace, applying 5S improves employee motivation in a structured way. I find that implementing 5S seems so easy, but hard to sustain in it. It reduces the searching time, cost of poor quality and it probably contributes to increased productivity since it shortens search times.

Para fazer uma Auditoria 5S é preciso antes definir os critérios, escopo, frequência e métodos da auditoria, elaborar um plano de auditoria, ter os programas de auditoria definidos e planejados. E também ter auditores qualificados para a função, ou seja, treinados e qualificados em auditoria 5S.

5S offers a way of work and think focused on doing things right from the begining and less on being reactive. Therefore: 1. Establish which are quality problems internal and external; 2. Identify where the problems can appear and how to prevent reoccurrence. 3. Design the sistem of activities that prevent occurance of the problems . This step suppose to go where the work is performed and design the workplace, the flow and the process that allows work right first time. 4. Prepare a vizual system and implement for workshop,quality control and quality assurance. 5. Quarterly assess the maturity of the sistem using a healthcheck. If there are quality problems, then there is a cause that was not considered. Preventive instead of reactive.
