Agile is an iterative approach to software development. Time to market is less and the customer gets to see the working software in early stages. This helps to get the customers feedback in early stages. The feedback can be easily be incorporated due to the iterative approach. The testing team also works concurrently with the development teams and thus defects can be uncovered at earlier stages which can be costly later if built into the system.

In using Agile concept in the DBM phase of oil and gas projects, I found that it helped me to be nimble in identifying new options early in the project. The concept helped the team to bring into play newer technologies for evaluation. This obviously added to possibilities of improvement on a given project and for future similar projects. The Agile concept also helped in identifying risks for the projects early on for each option and to do a risk assessment of the same. Most importantly, it helped the team to interact in a structured manner in a frequent manner which ensured that the design aspects got refined as the design work progressed. This obviously led to better design of the facilities.

Scrum is a framework that implements agile methodology. It has defined roles and ceremonies to mange team and work effectively/efficiently. Scrum Master acts as a facilitator to the team. Product owner is close to the client. The development team works for creating deliverable as per sprint goal. The scrum ceremonies( sprint planning, daily standup, review, retrospective) provide the team opportunity to manage, evaluate & improve upon their work.

Scrum framework has a ceremony focused 100% on continuous improvement. After every sprint, make sure to have you Sprint Retrospective and answer at least the following questions: 1. What went well? 2. What didn't go well? 3. What did we learn? Pro tip: use a fun retro tool!

As mentioned above, I used Agile concept for the DBM phases of energy projects too. I found the Scrum particularly useful. However, I adapted it for my oil & gas projects. The Project Manager acted as the product owner, the Project Engineer as the Scrum Master who facilitated the DBM level design process, identified impediments and worked to remove them. The design work was divided into discreet pieces (something akin to sprint) and progressed accordingly. Akin to sprint concept, the design work moved from one discreet piece to another after review with the stakeholders. At each discreet piece of design and engineering work, progress was reviewed, and plans were tweaked as necessary to stay on course per the overall project schedule.

Agility is a great framework to shift your perspective and mindset. If you approach your goals as MVPs to deliver, thinking about how to incrementally improve, it becomes an excellent way to quickly make tangible changes. Revisit your progress every other week, identify your objectives for the next week, and work towards the goal of accomplishing your "MVP" against a predetermined deadline. It could be a new habit or skill. Agile principles are easily transferable from the project world into your own life.

In my experience I found that the entire team needs to have the agile mindset for the methodology to work effectively. Unless the team members do not subscribe to the concept with sincerity, they will not be able to use the iteration, feedback, adaptation, and improvement process properly. The agile mindset does help you to improve your project management skills, by being open, flexible, curious, and collaborative. However, as a PM, you would need to be decisive keeping an eye on the overall project schedule. You will need to prevent endless churns in iterations. Make sure the team is aware of the project scope, design objectives, and then proceed accordingly in the front-end engineering.
