AI-based cybersecurity products are projected to surge to a $135 billion by 2030. With that said, AI can be used to prevent cyber-attacks by providing enhanced threat detection to identify actual cyberattacks more accurately than humans, minimizing false positives and prioritizing responses based on real-world risks. In addition, phishing detection is another prevention mechanism. AI is proficient at identifying suspicious emails, a common tool of threat actors. It helps to prevent successful phishing campaigns from occuring. Lastly, rapid incident analysis allows the analyzing of vast amounts of incident-related data quickly empowers security teams to take swift actions to contain threats, reducing the potential impact of cyberattacks.

As the former head of Palo Alto Networks Unit 42 Cloud Threat Intel Team, I can tell you that automation with SOAR platforms was the first giant leap. SOC analysts and threat hunters no longer had to do the arduous manual work of collecting data. What AI adds to this is human-like context and inference. AI in threat intelligence is more about the broad application of intelligent systems for analysis, decision-making, and automation, while ML is a subset of AI focused on learning from data to make predictions and detect anomalies. AI is a giant leap forward, but not a panacea.

AI's application in threat intelligence significantly enhances our cybersecurity capabilities.I integrated AI to automate the collection and analysis of threat data from various sources, including social media, dark web, etc. This AI system efficiently processed vast amounts of data to identify potential cyber threats and their sources. For example, the AI was crucial in pinpointing indicators of compromise (IOCs) such as suspicious IP addresses and malicious domains. It automatically updated our security systems with these IOCs, bolstering our defenses in real-time. Additionally, AI's predictive analytics played a key role in forecasting the likelihood and impact of future attacks. This enabled us to take proactive measures

AI/ML can revolutionize the CTI field by providing capabilities to detect and mitigate threats in real-time. AI-driven algorithms can continuously analyze datasets to identify suspicious patterns and behaviors that might go unnoticed by analysts. While powerful toolsets are crucial, the targeting methodology and intelligence personnel employed is equally vital, if not more important. Recruiting and developing trained personnel is a critical part of any Cyber Threat Intelligence (CTI) program. AI/ML-based systems can enable experinced threat hunters to prioritize their efforts more effectively by automatically identifying the most critical threats, reducing false positives, and focusing on the most sophisticated and targeted attacks.

Using AI for Malware analysis should be the minimum standard for any EDR tool. As AI-powered malware analysis involves using machine learning algorithms to detect and analyze patterns associated with malware behavior. This can include identifying malicious code, recognizing new variants of known malware, and providing insights into the tactics used by different types of malware.

I believe there are only about 100 people globally who can handle deep malware analysis; similar to how no one fully understands the Windows OS, as noted in the Windows C/C++ book. - AI automates malware behavior detection, reducing reliance on experts. - Pattern recognition enables quick malware identification and classification. - Scalability empowers more analysts to respond without deep system knowledge. AI will democratize malware analysis, allowing more professionals to tackle complex threats efficiently.

AI can aid in doing malware analysis but not completely replace human-led triaging or investigation with the traditional set of tools. There is also the reporting part for presenting the investigation which will need human review to validate.

I personally believe Malware analysis is the best use of the AI/ML technologies in cybersecurity as we can train the models with our empirical findings of past attacks, breaches and attack vectors which will enable the systems and people to better handle new vulnerabilities and measuring the scale of the impact and who knows even one day it will help in proactive detection of threats. The AI systems are a mirror of what we have in our knowledge and the best way to visualise the horizontal spread of the threats.

AI's most significant advantage in IR is adding context for responders. Where ML was/is mainly focused on finding patterns, AI brings intelligence to automation that likely did not exist before. It can make intelligent decisions where ML mostly made predictions that, unfortunately, were false positives. Bottom line: we are in the first inning of AI's application to cybersecurity. By the end of 2024, we will see AI applied to cyber in ways I cannot even begin to imagine. It's an exciting time to be in cyber.

Automated responses are effective for certain routine and repetitive tasks, however human intervention remains essential for complex decision-making and in-depth analysis. I believe the most suitable approach is to leverage automation for immediate actions, such as isolating compromised systems, while ensuring that skilled cybersecurity professionals are involved in the more nuanced aspects of threat investigation and response.

AI plays a pivotal role in incident response to prevent cyberattacks by enabling swift and effective actions. Through real-time monitoring and analysis, AI can detect suspicious activities and anomalies in network traffic, user behaviour, or system configurations. This early detection allows security teams to respond rapidly, minimising the impact of potential threats. AI-driven automation can also assist in blocking or isolating compromised systems, mitigating the spread of an attack. AI's ability to analyse large datasets helps in identifying attack patterns and potential vulnerabilities, enabling organisations to proactively address security weaknesses before they are exploited.

AI can help prevent cyber attacks by facilitating incident response, which is the process of containing, eradicating, and recovering from a cyber attack, as well as learning from it and improving the security posture. AI can automate the process of analyzing and prioritizing the incidents, and provide guidance and support to the security team or the end-users. For example, AI can use chatbots or voice assistants to communicate with the affected users and instruct them on how to respond to the attack, such as changing their passwords, restoring their backups, or reporting the incident.

By deep integration of ML in the Incident response workflow , automation can minimize time delta to triage and respond. If AI based defence architecture is well designed & deployed , it can dramatically improve the IR capabilities of the organisations.

While this might be considered as part of anomaly detection, deep fake detection is another important area that might be listed separately. The potential of AI to fight the AI that is used for creating deep fakes is tremendous, also because it plays to the favor of the defenders. We only need to spot small anomalies to raise the risk rating, while attackers need to be perfect. I expect substantial developments in that area in the near-term.

In two words- predictive analytics. AIOps tools can use threat intelligence data and traffic patterns to not only detect anomalies but potentially predict future threats. Integrate that into your existing SRE framework and you have a system that is capable of preventative detection and self-healing.

Calculating the probability of a particular venerability being exploited. 2. Mapping new vulnerabilities to your organisation's SBOM Using these two approached can significantly help an organisation on a limited budget triage potential vulnerabilities and help you to reduce your attack surface and reduce you risk from a costly cyber attack.

I think more than anything, AI lowers the barriers to entry of good cybersecurity analysis. For example, Microsoft Copilot for Security can already write KQL to run specific threat hunting queries. Don’t get me wrong; a better option would be to just use natural language to interface directly with Azure Graph and the 365 security telemetry, skipping the KQL step. But that will come with time. What it means is that more less-experienced tier 1 analysts are going to be able to run meaningful analysis playbooks, democratising deep threat hunting.
