How can data visualization techniques identify data similarities and differences across groups?

Bar charts and histograms serve as powerful tools for visualizing data and uncovering group disparities. Bar Charts succinctly compare categorical data, displaying differences among groups. For instance, visualizing sales across product categories reveals which perform better or worse, offering clear insights into group variations. Histograms ,on the other hand, unveil distribution patterns within numerical data sets. Analyzing test scores among different classes showcases disparities or similarities in performance distribution. Both visualizations provide quick, intuitive insights into group distinctions, aiding decision-making across industries like business, research, or education.

Everyone who looks at a metric and can imagine a picture with the metrics growing/declining is good with data visualization. In your head, you actually visualize the growth or decline in some sort of graphs/charts. What's important is knowing which visualization technique will actually help in creating an image for the board/team/supervisor, such that they do not have to imagine for themselves. Visualization techniques depend on the data as well as the inference on is looking for from the data. A bar chart will help in showing MoM/YoY growths/decline or relative to some other key metric . It will be able to show trends in differences as well as similarities, when the right metrics are compared.

Pie and donut charts are a simple but effective way to represent the data proportionately. Both charts help compare categories. However, care must be taken if the number of categories you want to compare increases, as it may become congested or cluttered. You can use the donut chart to give additional information at the center of the donut chart.

Bar charts, with their distinct bars representing different categories, make it straightforward to compare key metrics across groups. For example, in a retail analysis, using a bar chart to compare monthly sales across different store locations quickly highlights which stores are performing better than others. Histograms are particularly effective when I need to understand the distribution of a numerical variable across different segments. For instance, analyzing customer age distribution within different product categories. The 3D Scatter plot and Contour plot are the most fun and satisfying graphs I have ever used, just because of the conclusions you can get by using them and their visual appeal.

I’ve used scatter plots to examine relationships between different customer behaviors. For instance, plotting average order value against the number of site visits per customer. This helps in identifying trends like whether frequent site visits correlate with higher spending. In analyzing product performance, I use bubble charts where the x-axis represents the number of units sold, the y-axis shows the average review rating, and the bubble size reflects the profit margin. Two things stand out for me: a project I worked on at IBM and a Linux data analytics project (mostly for fun). In the former, the problem was to determine how a cloud storage appliance's throughput would be across a range of object sizes. It turned out that optimal predictors were a set of hyperbolas. Plotting throughput on log-log charts yielded almost straight lines, thus confirming the conjecture about the hyperbolas. In the latter, I wanted to obtain time series for key performance metrics (from "vmstat"). Area charts are fantastic resources for showing how share of a specific component have changed over time - particularly when they are stacked (to illustrate share against a 100% base). In visualization terms, I like to think of area charts as a "stretched out donut" chart - with the additional factor of time being one of the more common dimensions that can be compared across the bottom/x axis.

In my projects, I’ve found donut charts particularly effective for adding depth to the data story. The central space in a donut chart is a great place for a key takeaway or aggregate figure. For instance, in an HR dashboard, I used a donut chart to display the distribution of various employee engagement scores. Pie charts have been a staple in my visualization toolbox, especially for presenting clear, direct comparisons. In one of my recent analyses for a marketing campaign, I used a pie chart to illustrate the percentage breakdown of traffic sources to a website (like social media, direct traffic, referrals). What I find most effective about pie charts is their simplicity and immediate visual impact.

Failure point analysis with heat maps to see for instance what pairs of features are highly correlated, and thus more susceptible to failure when one of the two is affected.

Best graph for comparison overall: to me is the confidence interval plot. Especially for pairwise comparisons or analysis of one factor at a time. Also the individual value plot is useful to identify unusual data in the set when only one or a few predictors are present.
