How can landscape construction documentation create a sense of place and identity for a community?

IMHO, the sense of place & context is set at stages even earlier than construction documentation, i.e., at concept stage. That being said, there is room & opportunity during design development - where construction documentation happen - to fine tune the design & be more responsive to the local context. The concept intent should capture the design aspirations overall, but developed designs - aka. tweaked concept designs - capturing the correct local design language, located at the actual socio-spatial nodes, using the culturally relevant design/plant materials, IMHO, deliver the more user-responsive, user-satisfying space. Adequately researched concept design can hit the design solution on the head early on, & save on time and money.

I tend to follow the maxims of Christopher Alexander "A Pattern Language". 1. The interstitial exterior spaces between buildings provide the most commonly used spaces that are underutilized. 2. Use the examples he has unerringly documented for historical reference. These classical examples depict how to utilize common and public spaces since the beginning of time. What works well and what does not. 3. Learn from these and keep the book as reference within reach. 4. From the examples create a new vernacular based on local materials that enhance use of your common spaces, including landscape materials. The language already exists. Adapt for your needs. You cannot go wrong.

Incorporating sustainability into landscape construction documentation is crucial for creating a sense of place and identity.
