The best applications for deep learning are the applications that humans can do, but they cannot describe how they do it. Classifying if an image is a dog is easy, but I can’t tell you the exact formula to do it. Driving fits into the category and so is an effective tool for deep learning. Most of the applications of ML for autonomous vehicles uses deep reinforcement learning. Some startups use control theory, but the most valuable AV startups like Tesla, Crusie, etc all use deep RL. You take an image analyzed by a CV deep learning technique, along with indicators that come form LIDAR, lasers etc, and you build a model via RL that makes decisions for a vehicle.

Machine learning has the potential to greatly benefit autonomous vehicles, from enhancing safety by reducing human errors to improving efficiency by reducing fuel consumption and travel time. Additionally, machine learning can increase accessibility for people who cannot or prefer not to drive, such as the elderly, disabled, or young. There is also the possibility of creating new opportunities, such as ride-hailing, car-sharing, and entertainment. All of these benefits can reduce environmental and economic costs while providing new experiences for users.

4 What are the challenges of machine learning for autonomous vehicles?

Machine learning poses many challenges for autonomous vehicles, such as ensuring reliability in the face of uncertainty, noise, outliers, and adversarial attacks. It is also necessary to guarantee safety by ensuring that machine learning models meet ethical, legal, and social norms. Additionally, managing complexity is a challenge due to the need to integrate and coordinate multiple machine learning models, sensors, actuators, and systems. Finally, it can be difficult to acquire sufficient data that is relevant and diverse in order to enable machine learning models to generalize and transfer to new situations.

Deep RL is really bad at generalizing and very finicky to get working. 99% of the autonomous driving is figured out, but it’s the 1% that is difficult. For example if another car clips a pedestrian and they fall, the Autonomous vehicle following behind has never seen this problem in the training set and the algorithm doesn’t know how to behave. It’s these edge cases that are the problem.
