How can IT Operations managers foster a sense of community among employees?

I find it useful, though it seems kind of theoretical. I strongly believe that a manager needs to provide clear examples of implementation of such vision and values to his/her team. These examples need to be real so that team sees how manager put his/her efforts while realizing a part of vision or a value in a certain case. That makes team really believe and follow.

Nothing will build a strong team like organic communication between team members. As leaders we need to encourage team members to seek out those around them. Each team needs to build its own identity and leaders need to provide the motivation and the space for the team to find that identity. Only then will that organic communication become part of the team's SOP

IT has always been a bridge of communication in the organisation. Widely known for bringing transparency in the process and increasing efficiency and improving accuracy in the operation is the most important benefit of implementing IT systems. IT managers can leverage these advantages and bring teams closure by open channel communication.

Chances are that there are always areas in which to improve communication. And yes, communicating effectively means paying attention to even simple upgrade notifications and outage responses. Incorporate simple explanations of why alongside the announcement to help users understand why this seemingly silly step is necessary. Use your own voice to explain the process and remove as much uncertainty as possible. Lastly, use emotions, sometimes even humor will help, to make the message memorable and relatable.

One need to take into account cultural differences and previous experiences of the team members so to not only promote collaboration positively but also break those barriers like bad habits and fears that hold people from realizing their true potential.

As a leader, creating an environment that promotes collaboration, communication, and eventually a sense of belonging is crucial. With virtual teams, creating a 15 minute meetup at the virtual water cooler to create the collaborative space for team members to bond. As a leader, creating "A day in the Life" short video for each role or team and sharing it throughout the organization. Also taking time outside work to perform volunteer activity or virtual sessions like finhacks will help build teams. I believe that face to face is also essential with onsite meetings with entire team/organization at least once a year to build relationships and the sense of belonging.

Establish open and transparent communication channels. Regularly update employees on team goals, projects, and achievements. Encourage feedback and suggestions to make employees feel heard and valued. Encourage collaboration between different teams and departments. One organization I worked for fostered a sense of community providing internal paid learning Senn Delaney's "The Human Operating System." It provided a lexicon that all teams knew and used, for example the "Mood Elevator." As a coach creating learning opportunities that promote grit and growth mindset help build a diversity of thought community. It is crucial to acknowledge and celebrate progress - broadcasting the good work across the organization.

I find it useful that learning and development for team members goes with them sharing their experience and ideas from the learning to the rest of the team. In such a way that people learn from each other and the one who just passed a learning course digest it deeper. Than new ideas can provide motivation for new projects or making operations even more robust.

Make sure though that you ask the employee what topics interest them, and what is the best way they are able to learn? If people aren’t interested in the topic and leaders send employees to a boot camp for instance, you are out a lot of money, the employee doesn’t learn the material, and the employee is out 1-5 days. Also, some employees don’t want to develop themselves, and that is ok as well.

One of the most important ways to maintain employee well-being, is to maintain a fault-free culture. If the environment is finger-pointing and prone to assigning fault for any incidents, it creates high stress and fear. Giving the team a fear-free environment will surely improve well-being as well as the team's overall performance.

I have a zero questions asked policy if the first words are, “My family, my kids, my partner, my spouse, my pets…“ I lead with heart so the strength of my leadership drives from how my teams are able to operate without external factors limiting productivity. I need you 💯 on this project. If that two hour commute per day means you work from home for the next three weeks, that’s 30 hours to get proper rest, strategy, execution and bring milestones and deliverables to the table. Keeping an open dialogue about org mission, who we serve, and finding alignment in career growth where goals are mutually beneficial. I realize being human is first! People make the organization. I show up for my teams; they show up for the business! Win, win!

A simple tap on the back of the employee from their leader or a thank you for a job well done goes a long way. It is enabling the person to easily recognize that he is doing the work assigned to him correctly.
