Based on my experience: Increase awareness. Trainings are crucial to raise the level of security in an organisation and help to prevent IT security incidents. Most IT security incidents are caused by humans (lack of experience, error or ignorance). Employees are often the first line of defence against threats such as phishing, social engineering and malware. Training helps to raise awareness of these risks and empower them to recognise suspicious behaviour and potential threats. These measures can help to change employees' behaviour with regard to IT security. The same principle also applies to traditional compliance risks. By teaching employees to act in a more security-conscious manner, they help to minimise security risks.

I've always believed that the areas previously mentioned are essential. However, a critical aspect often overlooked is acceptance. There are those who acknowledge the risks yet choose not to act, those who shift the responsibility of these risks onto others, and those who actively work to reduce the risks. Among these, the most concerning are the ones who recognize the risks but decide to leave them unaddressed. These individuals pose the greatest threat, as their inaction can lead to significant vulnerabilities.

Beyond immediate problem-solving, cybersecurity professionals must embrace ongoing education and collaboration. Staying informed about emerging threats through ethical hacking, threat intelligence sharing, and participation in industry forums is critical. This proactive approach ensures that security measures remain robust and adaptive, considering the ever-evolving landscape of cyber threats and the need for continuous innovation in defense strategies.

Something that seems helpful- ask, many times- what could go wrong with our plan? What haven’t we thought of? What advice would I give to another expert that I might not, yet, have acted on myself? Challenge your thinking so far.

Define your policies, process and management procedures regarding your cybersecurity posture. System patching in cycles and rebooting production systems during non production operating hours. Identify mission critical systems to secure and encrypt the backups of these systems. Identify legacy systems and isolate the systems on separate networks. All endpoints have antivirus solutions along with hard drive encrypted. Continuous learning by listening to podcasts, watching webinars, learning from any phishing emails that make into staff inboxes. Follow and implement any industry best practices that help to secure your computer systems.

We need to be innovative in our approach to security. Problem-solving skills are crucial for thinking outside the box as a result of developing new and effective ways to protect against threats as well as to continuously assess and improve security measures in response to emerging threats and changing technologies.
