How can public policy professionals address the impact of globalization?

Application of some strategies can navigate the complexities of globalization and promote inclusive, sustainable, and equitable outcomes for societies and economies.

People first. There is greater need to recognise that each one of us are in the people's business. Our every action and initiatives, impact people. Keep people in mind, design programs that are empathetic, and specifically address their issues, and track the impact of those policies. Living as we are in an interdependent world, we need to have workable, time-bound programs and projects at local levels, where we can monitor the outcomes, and scale up to other areas, but only after understanding socio-cultural and economic realities of people there.

Globalization means different things in different contexts. From a business perspective it implies the increasing interdependence of economies on each other. This occurs at three levels - finance (where global flows are nearly frictionless), goods and services (where barriers continue to fall) and people (global mass migration, which is highly contentious). For advanced high knowledge economies, the inward migration of large numbers of migrants with little or no human capital can only lead to political and institutional instability. Hence, policy professionals must engage fully with migration issues, promoting the inflows of high knowledge migrants, while severely limiting the inflows of migrants without the necessary human capital.

Policy professionals may fall prey to reductionism and oversimplification of policies and actors at play. Policy professionals need to actively address the concerns and anxieties of individuals affected by globalization. This can be achieved through transparent and responsive governance, effective communication strategies, and the inclusion of diverse perspectives in the policy-making process.

Provide enough space for Developing and LDCs to play a meaningful role on global issues and institutions. Otherwise, alternative and destructive global force will emerge and set unchartered path.

It may be considered that an agreed period of global interaction by the old established rules – entirely offline and potentially even without traditional forms of intelligence oversight – is preferable to embracing new untested experimental innovations in global governance until all parties have had as much time as they desire to make representation and have secured their universally inalienable right to abstain.

Policy professionals should prioritize the development of comprehensive and inclusive policies to ensure that the benefits of globalization are widely distributed. This includes investing in education and training programmes to enhance the skills and adaptability of the workforce, as well as implementing social safety nets to protect vulnerable groups from the negative consequences of global economic integration. I have learnt that technology is a key enabler that has great potentials to transform the labour market and productivity.

In my experience, cultural sensitivity is crucial when working with diverse teams and partners worldwide. My experience in leading teams and negotiating with international stakeholders has taught me the art of cultural sensitivity. It's about not just understanding but appreciating the diverse perspectives that different cultures bring to the table. Innovation, too, is a core aspect of a global mindset. In our ever-changing world, embracing technology and innovative solutions is a necessity. For example, I've led teams in adopting fintech solutions and cutting-edge financial software to streamline processes and enhance operational efficiency. This adaptability and innovation are hallmarks of a modern finance and operations professional.

Trainings and education may also help, by equipping the individuals and communiy with the right skills on how to deal with globalized world

As an aspiring nation, Oman has always paid attention to knowledge transfer and capacity building. From my experience, I have found it helpful to focus on economic integration through the negotiation and implementation of trade agreements that not only facilitate the flow of goods, services, and investments across borders, but allocate sufficient provisions for local capacity building and indigenisation of knowledge, while protecting the interests of domestic industries and workers.

I believe in higher tiers of government. But in the global context these tiers must remain remote, as advisory boards only, for nations are as independent fiefdoms under heaven.
